HBO announced today that its AI-themed series Westworld will be returning for a fourth season. HBO programming president Casey Bloys had the following to say about the series:
From the Western theme park to the technocratic metropolis of the near future, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed every twist and turn from the minds of master storytellers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. We can’t wait to see where their inspired vision takes us next.
The same-day ratings for the show are down in its third season, but the premium cable channels do not pay as much attention to those stats because their business model does not rely on advertising. HBO takes into account digital and delayed viewing along with encore runs, and they also assess the number of subscribers that a show is driving to the show to determine its success. Series creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan have a contract that keeps them on as showrunners through a sixth season if HBO wants to keep it going that long.
Westworld started out in its first season in a western-themed park where androids known as “hosts” interact with human guests. The hosts start to become self-aware, though, and eventually venture to the outside world. It stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, and Aaron Paul and is based on the book and 1973 movie of the same name by Michael Crichton.
The current season will be winding down in May and we should expect to hear word on the fate of shows such as USA’s The Purge, ABC’s Emergence, and more. Go woke..go broke. The bad ratings speak for themselves, not giving it another season to blow. Hbo has nothing else to fall back on during this china flu pandemic.
