1. Spin-Offs from The Mandalorian Could Be on the Way
Disney CEO Bob Iger said in the company’s recent earnings call that the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian will continue beyond its second season (it recently wrapped up its first and has been renewed for a second year), and that they are considering spin-offs from the show. He went on to say that they are working on “the possibility of infusing it with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series”. He also said that future Star Wars projects will be targeted for the Disney+ streaming service for now, and they are “developing both television and features”. The second season of The Mandalorian will start streaming on the service in October of this year.
2. Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision Arriving This Year
There are multiple Marvel series in the works at Disney+, and we now know which months two of the shows will premiere. Falcon and Winter Soldier will follow the two title characters after the events of Avengers: Endgame and will debut in August. The Scarlet Witch and Vision will star in the series Wandavision which will debut in December. Hollywood Reporter gives the following description for that one:
WandaVision, described as taking inspiration from 1950s sitcoms, finds Scarlet Witch and Vision living their ideal suburban lives, but they begin to suspect not everything is as it seems.
Also currently in the works at Disney+ are She-Hulk, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight and the animated series What If?. No premiere dates have been set for those, but She-Hulk is supposed to start production in July.
3. Y: The Last Man Loses Lead Actor
FX’s long-in-development apocalyptic series Y: The Last Man has run into behind-the-scenes problems once again with the show’s male lead actor Barry Keoghan departing from the production. No replacement has been named yet and there is no word on whether this will delay the targeted late-2020 premiere of the show. This one began development back in 2015, and in 2016 Michael Green (Heroes, American Gods) came onboard as showrunner and writer. But he departed, along with co-showrunner Aïda Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage, Jessica Jones), in 2019 and Eliza Clark (Extant) was brought on in their place. The series is based on the comic by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra and takes place in a post-apocalypse where only one man (and his monkey) are left in a world run by women.
4. The CW Tries to Find The Lost Boys Once Again
Third time is a charm? The CW has been working on a television version of The Lost Boys for several years now, and maybe they will get it right this time. The project first began in 2017, but the network decided to pass on the show at that time. Last year it was revived, but The CW again passed on the pilot though they did extend the contract of two of the show’s actors. This year they have ordered yet another pilot, and Hollywood Reporter gives the following description:
When a mother and her Gen Z sons move to the seaside town where she grew up, they discover there’s a sinister reason the local cool kids sleep all day, party all night, never grow up and never get old. Family bonds are tested as the brothers find themselves on opposite sides of a mythological struggle.
It is based on the 1987 movie of the same name and the network will be considering the show for its 2020-21 season.
5. Production Notes: Owen Wilson Teams with Loki, Mike Colter Heads to Monsterland, and More
Owen Wilson has been cast in the upcoming Disney+ Loki series, though there is no word on what character he will be playing at this point. Mike Colter (Evil, Luke Cage) has been cast in one episode of the upcoming Hulu anthology Monsterland to be titled “Newark, New Jersey”. He will play a father who is grief-stricken after the death of his daughter. The prequel series for The 100 that is currently in development at The CW has received the title Anaconda. It takes place 97 years before the parent series and follows events immediately after the nuclear war that devastated the planet.
