Cancellation Watch: Doctor Who and Manifest Both Return Down

Since most shows were on break last week, there is not much in the way of ratings news, but there are still a couple of shows to report on. Doctor Who had its Season 12 premiere last Wednesday and pulled a 0.19 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 790K total viewers on BBC America. It then slipped to a 0.15 rating with 589K total viewers for its first episode in its regular Sunday timeslot. Those numbers are down notably from the 0.28 rating it averaged for Season 11, but YOY drops have become a standard trend of late. Across the Atlantic, the show pulled just under 5 million viewers for its January 1st episode and that slipped to 4.6 million for the Sunday ep, down from the show’s Season 11 premiere in Britain.

Despite the drop in viewership, don’t be expecting a cancellation announcement for this show anytime soon. Doctor Who is well-enough along that the same-day viewing does not have as much impact on its status. The ratings for the basic-cable channels continue to fall reflecting the fact that more-and-more people are watching on a delay or streaming it. Plus, this series is pretty much an institution now, and worse case scenario is that they would switch to a different Doctor in an attempt to revive viewer interest. So expect this show to be around for a few more years yet.

On Monday of this week, NBC’s Manifest returned for its second season and posted a 0.9 rating with 4.8 million total viewers. That is down from its Season 1 average, but it was still tied for the highest rated scripted show on the broadcast nets that night. The numbers will likely slip in the coming weeks because that is the usual trend, but if it does not drop too much and if it continues to see strong gains in delayed viewing, it could still be okay.

The regular Weekly Roundup post will resume next week and the Scorecard will be back in two weeks.
