What Is It?
His Dark Materials is a new BBC series based on the fantasy books of the same name by Philip Pullman that will also air on HBO. Following is the official description of the series:
Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living — and the dead — in their hands.

Status
This is a pretty high-profile series that is a joint venture between BBC and HBO, and it has been renewed for a second season in advance of its first. I would expect that they are planning for at least a few more seasons after that if the viewership will sustain it. You can keep up with the ratings results and further status updates during the season at the show’s page on this site.

Monday seems a strange night for HBO to air such a high profile series. It airs Sunday night on the BBC.
Watchmen got the Sunday night timeslot. Though it would have made some sense to team them up on the same night.
