Cancellation Watch Breaking News: CBS Wants More Evil, Renews the Supernatural Drama for Second Season

In yesterday’s Weekly Roundup post, I noted that NBC has already effectively cancelled two of its (non-genre) Fall shows which shows that the broadcast networks are still looking at the same-day ratings numbers and are still willing to pull the plug quickly on underperforming shows. However, CBS seems to be going in the opposite direction as it has already given a second season order to its new supernatural drama Evil. That series debuted in September and has had moderate at best same-day ratings, so far averaging a 0.63 score over its first month. The total viewership is averaging around four million which bumps up to over seven million with the early delayed-viewing reports. It is performing below the network’s average of a 0.76 rating, but not doing too bad for the Thursday 10 PM EST timeslot. I thought that the show might be on track for a full-season order, but apparently it was designed to have thirteen-episode seasons so CBS gave it the greenlight for a second year. The network also gave full-season orders to its other freshmen shows, even though none count as breakout hits this year. So while NBC has unleashed the Network Executioner early, CBS is acting more like its affiliated network The CW and renewing shows. This is good news for fans of Evil and suggests that we could have an interesting season of network exec decisions ahead of us in the midst of the Peak TV turmoil.

Evil follows a skeptical female psychologist and a priest-in-training as they investigate unexplained mysteries, including supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and hauntings, while examining the origins of evil along the dividing line between science and religion. It stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Michael Emerson, and Aasif Mandvi.

There are still quite a number of shows from the 2018-19 season that are awaiting word on their fate such as Cloak & Dagger, The InBetween, and Another Life.
