Sci Fi TV Top 5: Covering the top sci fi and fantasy TV stories of interest from New York Comic-Con. You can keep up with the latest sci fi and fantasy TV news headlines at r/SciFiTV on Twitter and on Reddit.
I already covered some of the early news coming out of the NYCC in the Friday Sci Fi TV Top Five post, and following is a rundown of more stories of interest from over the weekend.
1. The Walking Dead Has Been Renewed for an Eleventh Season and Laura Cohen Will Be Returning
At the NYCC panel for The Walking Dead this weekend, showrunner Angela Kang announced that the series has already been renewed for an eleventh season. That news comes as no surprise, despite the ratings declines from the past few years. Even though viewership has dropped off notably, it is still one of the top-rated shows on television, and AMC is committed to the franchise long-term. In addition to the renewal announcement, the panel revealed that Laura Cohan will be returning to the series as Maggie Greene. She was last seen in Season 9 before the time-jump that occurred which moved events six years ahead. She will return in Season 10 in a recurring role and then as a regular in Season 11. The tenth season of TWD had its debut on October 6th.
2. First Look at the New Walking Dead TV Series
In addition to the renewal announcement for TWD, the NYCC panel also unveiled the trailer for the as-yet-untitled third Walking Dead entry. Following is the official synopsis for the series:
The third installment of the franchise will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.
The series is currently scheduled for a Sping 2020 debut.
3. Star Trek: Picard Gets a Premiere Date and New Trailer.
Word broke at NYCC this past weekend that the premiere date for the new CBS All Access series Star Trek: Picard will by January 23, 2020, and a new trailer was released as well. We already knew that Brent Spiner would be reprising his TNG role of Data and that Jerry Ryn would show up as Seven of Nine, the character she played in Voyager. But the trailer reveals that William Riker (played by Jonathan Frakes) and Deanna Troi (played by Marina Sirtis) will be making appearances as well. And Screen Rant picked up on elements of the trailer that suggest the new series will go back to a storyline from a Next Generation episode, involving Data and his status as a sentient being, that could have dark implications.
4. Star Trek Discovery Heads to the Future
In more Trek news, the Season 3 teaser for Star Trek Discovery shows Commander Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) 930 years in the future, following from events at the end of the second season. In addition, a teaser for an upcoming episode of Star Trek Short Treks reveals a young Spock’s first day on the Enterprise as Number One takes him on a tour of the ship. You can see that at this link.
5. New Trailer for The Expanse Season 4
Fans have been waiting patiently for the fourth season of The Expanse since Amazon saved the show after it was cancelled by Syfy. The premiere date is set for December 13th, and a new trailer dropped for the show at NYCC. We hear President John F. Kennedy’s famous “We choose to go to the Moon” in voice-over as we see scenes for the upcoming new season which include the Rocinante and crew landing on a planet on the other side of the gateways created at the end of Season 3. The main cast–Steven Strait, Cas Anvar, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, and Thomas Jane–will be returning as will Frankie Adams as Bobbie Draper, David Strathairn as Klaes Ashford, and Shohreh Aghdashloo as Chrisjen Avasarala. At the San Diego Comic-Con this past Summer, it was announced that The Expanse has been renewed through its fifth season.
