What Is It?
In Supergirl, Kara Zor-El–cousin of Kal-El aka Superman–fights to protect her city Metropolis along with the world from threats both alien and human. Following is the synopsis for the series premiere:
Kara (Melissa Benoist) is surprised to find that CatCo has a new owner who has brought in a star reporter. New couples emerge and explore their budding relationships while J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood) receives an unexpected visitor.
Supergirl will also be part of this year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event which will bring major changes to the Arrow-verse. More on that at this link.

Status
The CW execs have said that they currently have no plans for ending any of the Arrow-verse shows beyond Arrow this season. But the ratings numbers have not come in yet and they have been on the decline the last few years. Supergirl already has enough episodes for a syndication runs (where shows really start to turn a profit), so it is not impossible that it could wrap up at season end. But The CW rarely cancels shows without notice, so consider a sixth season still a possibility at this point. But I would be surprised if this one lasts beyond that point. You can keep up with the ratings results and further status updates during the season at the show’s page on this site.
