Coming as no surprise, Netflix has renewed its retro-sci fi series Stranger Things for a fourth season. The streamer released a teaser for the fourth season today confirming the renewal. Netflix does not typically share its viewership numbers, but did release some stats for the show earlier in the Summer indicating that over 40 million people watched the third season. This is currently the most popular original on the streaming service and I considered a fourth season pretty much a sure thing. Apparently the delay in the announcement was due to new contract negotiations with the show’s creators the Duffer brothers. They have now signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix for future development. It is unclear how many more seasons that includes of Stranger Things and the Duffers previously indicated that they would wrap up the show around its fourth or fifth season. Netflix tends to cap off its shows around the third for fourth season these days, but they may want this one to stick around a bit longer because it still drives new subscribers to the service. A release date for Season 4 has not been set yet.
Stranger Things takes place in the small town of Hawkins in the mid-1980’s. It starts off when one boy goes missing and a mysterious girl shows up leading to the uncovery of nefarious dealings at a nearby research station. It stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin.
There are still quite a number of 2018-19 season shows that are awaiting word on their fates such as Cloak & Dagger, Another Life, and The InBetween.
