While the news apparently has not made it widely to the U.S. yet, the Netflix Brazil Twitter account passed on the announcement from series creator Pedro Aguilera that the dystopian series 3% has been renewed for a fourth and final season. Here is the announcement translated from Portuguese courtesy of Google:
Very happy to announce that 3 % are going to the fourth and last season and that everyone will be able to follow how this wonderful story ends . It’s my first original Brazilian series and I ‘m already excited just thinking about the Council overthrow!
I had that series On the Bubble because it was at the third season mark which is where Netflix tends to cap off its shows. It will get a fourth season, but that will be its last which is not surprising because the streaming service prefers to churn through new shows rather than keep existing ones going for an extended run. The streaming originals tend to bring in more subscribers during the early seasons, but have diminishing returns across subsequent years. But this show will at least get the opportunity to wrap up its storylines.
3% takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where the majority of the population lives in squalor, but a competition known as The Process allows young people to compete to join the elite who live in better conditions with only 3% of the candidates succeeding. It stars João Miguel, Bianca Comparato, Michel Gomes, Rodolfo Valente, and Vaneza Oliveira and is filmed in Portuguese with English subtitles in the U.S.
