As we reach the end of the 2018-19 season, there have been several cancellation announcements and fans are stepping up to try and saved their shows, both old and new. The most recent cancellation came last Friday as Syfy announced that Krypton will not be returning for a third season on that network. But WarnerMedia has an interest in keeping that show alive (and also moving forward with the planned Lobo spin-off) and that entertainment giant has the DCU and upcoming HBO MAX streaming services that Krypton could shift to as well as The CW where it could potentially join the Arrow-verse. Fans have started an online petition (currently over 1,500 signatures) to support the show and the #SaveKrypton hashtag has been trending on Twitter. Their continued efforts could help to keep that show alive.
Older cancelled shows have not been forgotten either, as fans of Netflix’s Sense8 (cancelled in 2017) continue to lobby for a third season of that sci fi drama. A raucous fan campaign following the cancellation announcement led to Netflix greenlighting a series finale which was released in June 2018. But fans still want more and co-creator Lana Wachowski has written most if not all of a third season of the show. A new online petition has been launched that has since tallied over 80K signatures. Fans have also taken to social media with the #ShareSense8 and #RenewSense8 hastags trying to convince others to sign up for Netflix to watch the show. That is a strategy I believe should be effective with the streaming services because it brings more subscriptions and appeals to the bottom line (thus getting the attention of network execs). The porn site xHamster has also offered to pick up that show (seriously), and fans may want to consider that angle.
Another cancellation from earlier this Summer was DCU’s Swamp Thing and fans still have hope it could return for a second season. Series co-star Ian Ziering believes the show could be saved if fans stage a Lucifer-like campaign to keep it alive. Perhaps that will get the momentum rolling on this one as the online petition is currently nearing 7.5K signatures.
Another Syfy cancellation from the past few months was the hard-boiled fantasy Happy! which was ended after its second season. Fans currently have a petition in place for that show and are working to keep the #SaveHappy hashtag trending. Just recently, Netflix cancelled its sci fi series The OA, and the fans have shown strong support for that one which I cover in more detail at this link. The fans of Freeform’s cancelled ShadowHunters continue to lobby for that show with a global tweet storm currently planned for August 24th. And the Save Daredevil campaign continues its heroic efforts to convince Disney to bring that show to Hulu or another venue. You can go to the SaveDareDevil.com site for more information on that.
In the current television environment, there are many ways that we can make our voices heard in support of our favorite shows. We have already seen Lucifer, The Expanse, and One Day at a Time saved from cancellation due fan efforts. So be sure to lend your support and also join the #CancelledSciFiArmy as we fight to save our sci fi and fantasy shows.
