Streaming Finds: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.
What Is It? This animated adaptation of The CW’s long-running Supernatural follows Same and Dean Winchester as they hunt demons and other nefarious supernatural beings.
Starring: Jared Padalecki, Andrew Farrar, Annakin Slayd, Jensen Ackles
The Skinny: This Anime series from Madhouse (Death Note, Ninja Scroll) came out in 2011 and adapted The CW’s live-action Supernatural to an animated format. It produced twenty-two episodes that borrowed storylines from the show’s first and second seasons while also exploring the backstories of Sam and Dean Winchester as well as other characters introduced in the show. The animation is quite good and it is nice to see some of these stories brought to life without The CW’s budget limitations. This acts as a nice introduction to the series for those who have not seen the live-action version and it also provides some additional exploration of the show’s universe that should attract fans of the original. Jared Padalecki voices Sam for the English dub of the series, while Jensen Ackles was only available to contribute to the final two episodes due to scheduling conflicts. Andrew Farrar provides the voice for Dean in the other episodes.
CW Seed is an offshoot of The CW which offers some original content as well as a small selection of shows owned by Warner Bros and CBS (the joint owners of The CW). Among the originals it has are the animated Arrow-verse offshoots Constantine: City of Demons, The Vixen, and Freedom Fighters: The Ray as well as the live-action comedy web series How to Be a Vampire. Among the past genre shows it offers are Moonlight, Pushing Daisies, Blade: The Series, and the live-action Constantine. It runs adds, but about the normal amount for an ad-supported streaming service. CW Seed has apps available for Roku, Apple, Amazon Fire, and most of the streaming platforms.
