Sci Fi TV News Briefs: Quick hits keeping you updated on sci fi and fantasy television news.
Amazon Heads to the Event Horizon: Amazon is developing a TV series based on the 1997 Paul W. S. Anderson film Event Horizon. That sci fi / horror entry follows a rescue mission sent to investigate the disappearance and subsequent reappearance to the experimental space ship Event Horizon. When they arrive, they find that the ship’s gravity drive took it to a nightmarish dimension and has brought back a sinister presence with it. The film starred Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill and has since become a cult-favorite. Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. King Kong) will executive produce and direct the series and Amazon will likely be targeting a 2020 debut date.
ABC Lets the Women Lead: Agents of SHIELD will be coming to an end with its upcoming seventh season, but it looks like the network will not be long without a Marvel superhero on the schedule. According to Deadline Hollywood, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke claims that the network is in “active talks” on a new series that will have a female lead and will be “something brand new, mostly”. The network was previously developing a series based around a team of female superheroes with Wonder Woman scribe Allan Heinberg attached. But that was put on hold and now they are looking to develop a different series, though still with a female lead. Expect more updates on this over the next few months.
The Return of Agent Carter: Fandomwire.com claims that Hayley Atwell will be returning to the role of Agent Carter in the upcoming final season of Agents of SHIELD. There has been no official announcement at this point (and filming on the final season has already been completed), but it could make sense considering some of the time travel developments from the sixth season of AoS. This could provide a way to link the latter series to the short-lived (and much beloved) Agent Carter so that they could be packaged together in syndication. This could also be a way to test the waters for a possible revival of the Agent Carter series on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service (pure speculation, I have no inside information suggesting that is the case). Stay tuned for more announcements on this.
Production Notes: Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have signed a $200 million multi-year development deal with Netflix. Their alternate history series Confederate will not be part of the deal and that one is now dead at HBO. Talitha Bateman, Ato Essandoh, Mark Ivanir, Ray Panthaki and Vivian Wu have been cast alongside Hillary Swank in the upcoming Netflix astronaut drama Away. Danny Trejo has been cast in the sci fi series Paragon which is in development with Pikchure Zero Entertainment. Amazon has announced that the upcoming first season of its Lord of the Rings prequel series will have twenty episodes.

LOTR: 20 episodes is a lot these days. Hopefully there isn’t a lot of filler
