Ratings Results of Interest: On Sunday, AMC’s supernatural romp Preacher returned for its fourth season posting a 0.15 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 622K total viewers. That’s down by by nearly 40% from its third season average which was down by about the same amount from its second year. The viewership continues to decline for this series, but AMC did bring it back for a fourth and final season to wrap up its storylines.
On Friday, ABC’s Agents of SHIELD held at a 0.4 rating with 1.9 million total viewers for its season finale. That one returns this upcoming season for its seventh and final year. Over on Syfy, Killjoys improved some to a 0.08 rating with 384K total viewers. That show is in its final season.
On Thursday, The CW’s The Outpost improved slightly to 0.2 rating with 652K total viewers, but that show’s international viewership may have more influence on its fate. Leading in to that, iZombie held mostly steady for its series finale with a 0.2 rating and 749K total viewers. Over on Freeform, Siren slipped to a 0.12 rating with 435K total viewers for its season finale. Don’t be surprised if its upcoming third season is announced as its last.
On Wednesday, NBC’s The InBetween improved to a 0.4 rating with 2.6 million total viewers and its ratings have been mostly okay for a Summer series the last few weeks. The network may have given up on that one before it began, though, so not sure if those numbers are helping. Over on Syfy, Krypton improved to a 0.13 rating with 381K total viewers–its best numbers of the season–but it still remains On the Bubble.
On Monday, Adult Swim’s Final Space continued its upward trend as it posted a 0.35 rating with 676K total viewers. I am liking its chances of returning for a third season. Over on HBO, Years and Years posted a 0.04 rating with 265K total viewers for its series finale.

News Roundup: The TCAs continue when the network execs meet with the television critics, and there are plenty of announcements coming from those meetings. The CW brass announced that the upcoming seventh season of The 100 will be its last. They also indicated that there are currently no plans to end any of the Arrow-verse series beyond Arrow which wraps up with its upcoming eighth season. Netflix has cancelled its sci fi drama The OA after two seasons. The upcoming mini-series reboot of The Stand which is headed to CBS All Access will get a final chapter written by Stephen King that will act as a coda to the story. In development news, CBS All Access is working on a series based on The Man Who Fell to Earth while Amazon is working on a Fast Color TV series based on the 2018 film of the same name.
Status Updates: Netflix Has Cancelled The OA after Two Seasons
Below are the status updates for all the currently airing shows or those still awaiting word on their fate, including the those on the streaming services. You can click through to the show pages to see week-over-week ratings results (where available) and find out more information about the series. Currently Airing / Streaming:
The 100 (CW, Status – Renewed): This show has been renewed for a seventh season, and as expected that will be its last.
3 Percent (Netflix, Status – On the Bubble): This show has returned for its third season, but that’s typically where Netflix caps off its originals these days. If fans want the show to continue, they should make a Call to Action on the social networks and try to convince people to subscribe to Netflix to watch the show.
Agents of SHIELD (ABC, Status – Renewed): There were rumors that this show’s sixth season might be its last season, but ABC has decided to bring it back for a seventh year which will air in Summer 2020. As expected, that will be its last.
Another Life (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): This show has not generated much buzz so far, nor has Netflix done much to promote it. But that streaming service tends to let its show go at least two season, so it could stick around for another year.
Black Mirror (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Netflix tends to end its originals around the three season mark, but this one may be able to hold on longer because the streaming service continues to roll out each new season as a major event.
Blood and Treasure (CBS, Status – Renewed): Despite the ratings drop-off from the last few weeks, CBS has decided to continue the adventure for this show and will be bringing it back for a second season in Summer 2020).
The Boys (Amazon, Status – Renewed): Amazon gave this show a second season renewal before its first began and the buzz has been pretty good for it thus far. It would say it has a decent chance of making it to at least the three season mark which is where the streaming services seem to be capping off their shows now.
Dark (Netflix, Status – Renewed): This show will be returning for a third season, and that will be its last which has become a typical run for Netflix.
Fear the Walking Dead (AMC, Status – Renewed): The Walking Dexit continues for this show as it has returned down from last year’s numbers. But as expected it has been renewed for a sixth season. Whether that will be its last remains to be seen.
Final Space (ADSW, Status – Renewal Possible): This show has switched to Adult Swim in its second season which as worked out well so far seeing as its ratings are up notably this year. If it remains around its current levels, expect it to return for a third season.
Good Omens (Amazon, Status – Mini-Series): Amazon execs have indicated that they would be interested in a second season of this show, but they say that is in the hands of Neil Gaiman at this point.
The Handmaids Tale (Hulu, Status – Renewed): As expected, this show has been renewed for a fourth season. The streaming services have had a tendency to cap off there shows around the third year mark, but this show has become a flagship series for Hulu and continues to draw attention during awards season, so I expect it to stick around for a while.
The InBetween (NBC, Status – On the Bubble): This show was originally intended for Mid-Season but was pushed to a Summer start which is never a good sign. It debuted with decent ratings for a Summer entry, but those have slipped and the network has preempted it twice already suggesting that they see this as a burn-off run. I have moved this one to Bubble status and fans should definitely take to the social nets with a Call to Action to bring more attention it.
Into the Dark (Hulu, Status – Renewal Possible): There were rumors flying around this week that Hulu had renewed this series for a second season, but nothing has been confirmed at this point. Consider a second season renewal to be a good bet, though.
iZombie (CW, Status – Final Season): While never a strong ratings contender for The CW, iZombie has had a devoted following and the network is given it one finale season to wrap up its storylines.
Killjoys (Syfy, Status – Final Season): In keeping with the trend we have been seeing from Syfy shows lately, the ratings for this one are down notably year over year. But its final season was announced in advance, so it will at last have the chance to wrap up its storylines.
Krypton (Syfy, Status – On the Bubble): This show has returned down in its second season with premiere ratings over fifty percent below its first year average (more on that at this link). NBCUniversal (Syfy’s parent company) does not have an ownership stake in the show and typically that means its revenue source is from advertising which is driven by same day ratings. Fans need to make a Call to Action to bring more attention to the show and hopefully get some Nielsen Families tuning in.
Legion (FX, Status – Final Season): This show’s third season has been announced as its last which will give it the opportunity to wrap up its storylines.
Lucifer (Netflix, Status – Renewed): This show has been renewed by Netflix for a fifth season, but that will be its last. The episode order has been extended from ten to sixteen, possibly to get it to a more syndication friendly count, but also as a nod to the support the show has received from fans.
NOS4A2 (AMC, Status – Renewed): The same day ratings have not been great for this show and it has been losing over half the lead-in audience from FtWD, but AMC still decided to give it a second season renewal.
The Outpost (CW, Status – Renewal Possible): The numbers for this show are down in its second season, but it is an acquisition that fills up space on the schedule during the Summer months. If it continues to do well internationally, it could come back for a third year.
Pandora (CW, Status – Renewal Possible): As with The Outpost, this series is an acquisition for The CW that fills up space on the Summer schedule. Its ratings are not great, but may be good enough to get a second season nod from the fifth place network.
Pennyworth (Epis, Status – Renewal Possible): The viewership for Epix is not picked up by Nielsen, so it is difficult to gauge the show’s status. This is a pretty high-profile series for the network, though, so I would say it has a decent chance of sticking around for a second season.
Preacher (AMC, Status – Final Season): The ratings have been declining for this series since its first season, but AMC still gave it the fourth season renewal to wrap up its storylines.
The Rook (Starz, Status – On the Bubble): This show is barely registering in the ratings and I am moving it to Bubble status. Its international viewership may have more influence on its fate, but it would probably be a good idea for fans to make a Call to Action on the social networks to bring it more attention.
Scream (VH1, Status – On the Bubble): This show actually posted decent numbers for its double-episode season premiere on Monday night, but saw those drop notably the next two nights. Considering the long delay between seasons and the fact that it was shifted to another network, these ratings will likely not encourage Viacom / VH1 to move forward with a fourth season. Fans may want to make a Call to Action on the social nets, though, to see if that can help.
Siren (Freeform, Status – Renewed): This show received a third season renewal, but its numbers slipped somewhat in its second year. Do not be surprised if its upcoming season is announced as its last.
Stranger Things (Netflix, Status – Renewal Likely): This show has hit the third season point when Netflix usually wraps up its originals, but it is setting viewership records and continues to be a huge event for the streaming service. Expect this one to stick around for at least one more season and possibly more.
Years and Years (HBO, Status – Mini-Series): This show (from Doctor Who‘s Russel T. Davies) is being billed as a six-part mini-series and has already aired in Britain on BBC One. If it does come back for a second season, that will likely be driven by the viewership in its home country.
Young Justice (DCU, Status – Renewal Possible): This show received a fourth season renewal notice at the San Diego Comic-Con
Season Ended But Still Awaiting Renewal / Cancellation Decision:
Black Summer (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): As a new series on Netflix, this show has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.
Cloak and Dagger (Freeform, Status – On the Bubble): This show’s numbers have slipped to dangerous territory the last few weeks and are down overall this season. Disney owns Marvel and Freeform, so they could give the show some slack and still bring it back for a third season. But a Call to Action from fans may be needed to keep this show going.
Mars (NGC, Status – On the Bubble): This show’s same day viewing numbers were down notably in its second year, but it relies more heavily on its global viewership stats. I consider a third season possible, though Nat Geo may decide to wrap it up at that point.
The OA (Netflix, Status – Cancelled): This show has been cancelled by Netflix after two seasons. Whether fans will lobby to save the show remains to be seen.
Osmosis (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.
SuperMansion (Crackle, Status – Renewal Possible): There has been no word on a fourth season of this show, but it has done well for Crackle so far and has also performed well in its encore run on Adult Swim. It released another special as recently as April 2019 and that might be its output for a while as the principals try to work in enough time in their schedules to produce more episodes.
Tidelands (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): This show is an Australian import for Netflix, so I’m not certain if its fate is more heavily determined by how it performs Down Under. As with any first-season entry on the streamer, though, I would say that it has a shot at a second season.
Ultraman (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.
