Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Netflix Has Cancelled The OA after Two Seasons

Netflix announced today that its sci fi mystery series The OA will not be returning for a third season. That streaming service has typically let its shows run to about the three-season mark (though rarely more than that these days), but apparently decided this one has run its course. VP of Original Content Cindy Holland did not give a reason for the cancellation but did praise the show and its creators:

We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of The OA, and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their incredible artistry.

Netflix does not share its viewership numbers, but The OA has been well received by fans and critics so far. It holds a 77% Fresh Ratings and a 76% Audience Score for its first season and a 92% Fresh Rating with a 89% Audience score for its second season on Rotten Tomatoes. Whether fans will lobby for a third season of the show remains to be seen.

The OA follows a young woman who returns after having disappeared seven years ago and who recruits five strangers to assist her with a secret mission. It stars Brit Marling, Emory Cohen, Scott Wilson, Phyllis Smith, and Alice Krige and had sixteen total episodes over two seasons.

Netflix currently has several more shows awaiting word on their fates included Strange Things (renewal likely), Another Life (renewal possible), and Osmosis (status uncertain).
