Coming as no surprise, Hulu announced yesterday at the TCAs that is dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale will be returning for a fourth season. That is one of the streaming service’s most-watched original series and it has drawn plenty of attention during awards season, winning an Emmy for best drama and best actress after its first year. The first season of the series adapted Margaret Atwood’s book, and it has since gone beyond that story to continue to develop the world of Gilead. The creative team have mapped out a storyline that could carry the show up to eight seasons if it remains a popular enough draw for the streaming service. It is currently streaming its third season, releasing one episode a week, and will wrap that up on August 14th.
The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a near future where a strict religious movement has taken over much of the United States after fertility rates have fallen to dangerously low levels across the world. Following from a passage in the Bible, women who can still conceive are forced to work for the ruling elite and bear their children. It stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, and Madeline Brewer.
