There were plenty of announcements this past weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con and I am just now getting caught up on everything. Among the renewals, Amazon as given its superhero series The Boys a second year nod ahead of its premiere on July 26th. Apparently the streamer has confidence in the series and decided to give it a boost with the Comic-Con announcement. It is based on the popular comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and stars Jack Quaid, Elisabeth Shue, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, and Karl Urban and it comes from Supernatural creator Eric Kripke.
AMC was also handing out renewals with an early announcement of a sixth season for Fear the Walking Dead along with a second season renewal for its supernatural series NOS4A2. The renewal for that latter series was not a sure thing because its same day ratings have dropped fairly low the last few weeks. But Deadline Hollywood claims that its delayed viewing numbers have been good and the cable nets do tend to give those more weight. That show also may have international deals giving it a boost as well. It is based on the Joe Hill novel of the same name and stars Zachary Quinto, Ashley Cummings, Jahkara Smith, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Virginia Kull and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Seth McFarlane’s space dramedy The Orville will be switching networks when it returns for its third season in late 2020. That show will jump from FOX and become a Hulu exclusive at that point. 20th Century FOX Television previously owned that show, but it has moved to Disney with the recent buyout. And apparently the Mouse House has decided to move the show to the streaming service which it now mostly owns. The Orville‘s same day ratings were down notably in its second season and sci fi shows tend to not do well on the broadcast networks, so the move to Hulu should be considered a good thing.
Other announcements from SDCC that we previously covered include renewals for DCU’s Doom Patrol and Young Justice as well as a final season announcement for ABC’s Agents of SHIELD.
