Sci Fi TV News Briefs: Quick hits keeping you updated on sci fi and fantasy television news.
Final Season Announcement: Word broke this week that ABC’s Agents of SHIELD will be ending after its seventh year. The show is currently airing its sixth season and received a renewal announcement just before that began. The news does not come as a huge surprise as this has been a perennially low-rated show for several years now, though it is also a fan-favorite that does well in delayed viewing. Marvel television apparently wanted to wrap up the show after its fifth season, but ABC decided to keep it around for two more season. There are no other Marvel shows on the schedule for the upcoming season, but the network will almost certainly get something in development for the 2020-21 season.
The Return of Picard: In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Alex Kurtzman and Michael Chabon revealed some more details about the upcoming Star Trek: Picard series. The character will be older (obviously) and no longer part of Starfleet, and he will be trying to “fight an injustice” (no specifics on what exactly). The series will not use the more traditional Star Trek episodic format, but will instead be serialized. And characters from TNG could make an appearance on the show. There will be Comic-Con panel for the show on Saturday, so expect more news to come from that.
Warhammer Time: A television series based on the Warhammer 40,000 game is in the works with The Man in the High Castle creator Frank Spotnitz attached. The series will be titled Eisenhorn and The Hollywood Reporter give the following description for the project:
The series will be set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where mankind teeters on the brink of annihilation. While humanity’s armies wage unending war across a million battlefields, in the darkness, a secret conflict rages, fought by the agents of the Imperial Inquisition. Drawing from sci-fi, fantasy and crime genres, Eisenhorn will see Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and his band of investigators fight to thwart the monstrous schemes of aliens, heretics and demons before mankind’s doom is sealed.
Spotnitz will be showrunner and executive producer on the series and it will be based on the books by Dan Abnett. No network is currently attached, but this project should attract plenty of attention.
Reigning over the Emmys: HBO’s Game of Thrones set a record with 32 nominations for its final season. Among those are Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor for Kit Harington, Lead Actress for Emilia Clarke, Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Other genre shows that received nominations include The Handmaid’s Tale, Black Mirror, The Good Place, and American Horror Story. The Handmaid’s Tale was not eligible for Best Drama and some of the other major categories this year due to the timing of when its third season began. But it is eligible for some minor categories.
