Cancellation Watch Weekly Roundup: Stranger Things Season 3 Sets Viewership Records for Netflix, NOS4A2 Remains Low, and More

Weekly Roundup: Ratings results and status updates on all the currently airing sci fi & fantasy shows as well as those still awaiting word on their fates. For the latest ratings updates, be sure to follow the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site

Ratings Results of Interest: While Netflix does not usually release its viewership numbers, when it has the opportunity to brag it certainly takes it. And the streaming service did just that when it revealed on Twitter that the third season of Stranger Things has set viewership records and has been watched by more than 40.7 million household accounts in the first four days following its July 4th premiere. That sets it above any other series or movie on that service, and Netflix also noted that over eighteen million had already watch the entire third season. That streamer has had a tendency to end its shows after three seasons, but Stranger Things will almost certainly stick around longer than that. Each season have become an event and the show likely still draws new subscribers to the service, so expect at least a fourth year from this one if not more. The series creators previously indicated that they envisioned wrapping up the show around its fourth or fifth season.

On Monday of last week, Adult Swim’s Final Space slipped to a 0.22 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 418K total viewers after shifting to the 11:30 PM EST timeslot. I still consider that one to be on track for a third season renewal. FX’s Legion improved slightly to a 0.14 rating with 381K total viewers.  It is in its final season

On Wednesday, NBC’s The InBetween slipped to a 0.3 rating with 2.1 million total viewers after a week off and while airing before a holiday. That one appears to be in burn-off mode for the network and I consider it very much On the Bubble. Over on Syfy, Krypton remained low at a 0.11 rating with 454K total viewers as it remains On the Bubble. On Friday, Agents of SHIELD slipped a bit to a 0.3 rating with 1.7 million total viewers, but it has already been renewed for a seventh season.

On Sunday, AMC’s NOS4A2 remained low at a 0.17 rating with 666K total viewers and it will move to Bubble status if it does not improve soon. Leading into that, Fear the Walking Dead slipped to a 0.42 rating with 1.5 million total viewers, but I believe that one will stick around for at least one more season. Starz’s The Rook continues to barely register with a 0.04 rating and 288K total viewers. Unless that one is more dependent on its international audience, I don’t like its chances of getting a second season.

News Roundup: Syfy’s supernatural western Wynonna Earp will be back for a fourth season after that network and the Canadian Space channel have kicked in money for the production to get IDW Entertainment through its financial difficulties that put the fate of the show in doubt. In development news, Netflix will be adapting Neil Gaiman’s Sandman after paying a high price tag for the property. And a new Anime that will adapt the full Akira manga is in the works. More on those and other development announcements at this link.

Status Updates: The InBetween Moves to Bubble Status

Below are the status updates for all the currently airing shows or those still awaiting word on their fate, including the those on the streaming services. You can click through to the show pages to see week-over-week ratings results (where available) and find out more information about the series.  You can see the status of all the currently airing and returning sci fi TV shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Currently Airing / Streaming:

The 100 (CW, Status – Renewed): This show has returned for its sixth season with decent ratings for a CW entry and has already been renewed for a seventh season.

3 Percent (Netflix, Status – On the Bubble): This show has returned for its third season, but that’s typically where Netflix caps off its originals these days. If fans want the show to continue, they should make a Call to Action on the social networks and try to convince people to subscribe to Netflix to watch the show.

Agents of SHIELD (ABC, Status – Renewed): There were rumors that this show’s sixth season might be its last season, but ABC has decided to bring it back for a seventh year which will air in Summer 2020.

Black Mirror (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Netflix tends to end its originals around the three season mark, but this one may be able to hold on longer because the streaming service continues to roll out each new season as a major event.

Blood and Treasure (CBS, Status – Renewed): Despite the ratings drop-off from the last few weeks, CBS has decided to continue the adventure for this show and will be bringing it back for a second season in Summer 2020).

Dark (Netflix, Status – Renewed): This show will be returning for a third season, and that will be its last which has become a typical run for Netflix.

Fear the Walking Dead (AMC, Status – Renewal Possible): The Walking Dexit continues for this show as it has returned down from last year’s numbers. But it is still doing well enough for a cable series these days and could still stick around for another year.

Final Space (ADSW, Status – Renewal Possible): This show has switched to Adult Swim in its second season which as worked out well so far seeing as its ratings are up notably this year. If it remains around its current levels, expect it to return for a third season.

Good Omens (Amazon, Status – Mini-Series): This show has been advertised as a six-episode mini-series with no indication that it might carry on beyond that point. But if it proves to be a huge hit for Amazon, they could find ways to continue the story.

The Handmaids Tale (Hulu, Status – Renewal Possible): This show has returned for its third season and I expect it will be drawing attention at awards time again this year. The streaming services have shown a tendency to wrap up their shows around the third season, but I’m thinking this one is good for at least another year if not more.

The InBetween (NBC, Status – On the Bubble): This show was originally intended for Mid-Season but was pushed to a Summer start which is never a good sign.  It debuted with decent ratings for a Summer entry, but those have slipped and the network has preempted it twice already suggesting that they see this as a burn-off run. I have moved this one to Bubble status and fans should definitely take to the social nets with a Call to Action to bring more attention it.

Into the Dark (Hulu, Status – Renewal Possible): There were rumors flying around this week that Hulu had renewed this series for a second season, but nothing has been confirmed at this point.  Consider a second season renewal to be a good bet, though.

iZombie (CW, Status – Final Season): While never a strong ratings contender for The CW, iZombie has had a devoted following and the network is given it one finale season to wrap up its storylines.

Krypton (Syfy, Status – On the Bubble): This show has returned down in its second season with premiere ratings over fifty percent below its first year average (more on that at this link). NBCUniversal (Syfy’s parent company) does not have an ownership stake in the show and typically that means its revenue source is from advertising which is driven by same day ratings. Fans need to make a Call to Action to bring more attention to the show and hopefully get some Nielsen Families tuning in.

Legion (FX, Status – Final Season): This show’s third season has been announced as its last which will give it the opportunity to wrap up its storylines.

Lucifer (Netflix, Status – Renewed): This show has been renewed by Netflix for a fifth season, but that will be its last. Whether fans will make a Call to Action on the social networks to keep it going beyond that remains to be seen.

NOS4A2 (AMC, Status – Renewal Possible): The debut numbers for this show were decent for a cable series these days, but is has slipped notably since then and could be heading to Bubble status soon. Fans should make a Call to Action on the social networks to bring more attention to this show.

The Rain (Netflix, Status – Renewed): This show did receive a third season renewal, and as expected that will be its last.

The Rook (Starz, Status – Renewal Possible): This show barely registered with its debut in the U.S., but its international viewership may have more influence on its fate. We will have to see how it tracks in the coming weeks.

Siren (Freeform, Status – Renewed): This show’s numbers have slipped some since returning from hiatus, but it has already received a third season renewal.

Stranger Things (Netflix, Status – Renewal Likely): This show has hit the third season point when Netflix usually wraps up its originals, but it is setting viewership records and continues to be a huge event for the streaming service. Expect this one to stick around for at least one more season and possibly more.

Years and Years (HBO, Status – Mini-Series): This show (from Doctor Who‘s Russel T. Davies) is being billed as a six-part mini-series and has already aired in Britain on BBC One. If it does come back for a second season, that will likely be driven by the viewership in its home country.

Young Justice (DCU, Status – Renewal Possible): According to Business Insider, this show has been a hit thus far, but that may not matter because the DC Universe streaming service may not be sticking around much longer. More on that at this link. It resumes new episodes on July 2nd.

Season Ended But Still Awaiting Renewal / Cancellation Decision:

Black Summer (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): As a new series on Netflix, this show has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.

Cloak and Dagger (Freeform, Status – On the Bubble): This show’s numbers have slipped to dangerous territory the last few weeks and are down overall this season. Disney owns Marvel and Freeform, so they could give the show some slack and still bring it back for a third season. But a Call to Action from fans may be needed to keep this show going.

Doom Patrol (DCU, Status – On the Bubble): There were early rumors that this show had been renewed for a second season before its first season had started, but there was never official confirmation on that. Now, the show could be in trouble and could get squeezed out as Warner Bros. is rethinking the future of the DCU streaming service. More on that at this link.

Mars (NGC, Status – On the Bubble): This show’s same day viewing numbers were down notably in its second year, but it relies more heavily on its global viewership stats. I consider a third season possible, though Nat Geo may decide to wrap it up at that point.

The OA (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): This show could get a third season (which seems to be the ceiling for Netflix shows of late), but a push from fans could definitely help to bring it more attention.

Osmosis (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.

SuperMansion (Crackle, Status – Renewal Possible): There has been no word on a fourth season of this show, but it has done well for Crackle so far and has also performed well in its encore run on Adult Swim. It released another special as recently as April 2019 and that might be its output for a while as the principals try to work in enough time in their schedules to produce more episodes.

Tidelands (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): This show is an Australian import for Netflix, so I’m not certain if its fate is more heavily determined by how it performs Down Under.  As with any first-season entry on the streamer, though, I would say that it has a shot at a second season.

Ultraman (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.

  1. Don’t get your hopes up on more Years and Years. Russell T Davies has said there will never be a second season, there was never going to be a second season. He’s also said he will never reveal what happened with the cliffhanger ending – you’re supposed to decide for yourself what happened – which normally I would hate but it kinda works. Great smart Sci-Fi.
