Syfy’s fan-favorite supernatural western Wynonna Earp was renewed last Summer for a fourth season (and reportedly through a fifth as well), but the show got derailed this year when its production company ran into financial troubles. Word broke back in February that production had been delayed on the fourth season because IDW Entertainment was facing money issues. That show has a very dedicated fanbase, though, and they took to the social networks with the #FightForWynonna campaign. And those efforts have now been rewarded as Syfy and Canadian partner Space have agreed to help with the finances to assure that the fourth season does happen. The options for the show’s cast had expired, but those are being reworked now so that production can begin on the new season. It will be 2020 before that gets on the air, but I’m sure fans are happy to know that it will be going forward.
Whether the fifth season will happen remains to be seen. That show’s ratings have been low through its first three years, so its possible that its fourth season will be its last because it will be more expensive to Syfy now and the network will not have an ownership stake. The fact that the show has been a relatively cheap for Syfy has likely factored into why it has remained on the air despite its low ratings. Since that network will only make money from the advertising for the live broadcasts, it may decide not to keep it around for a fifth year if the numbers remain low. Fans should take to the social nets and thank both Syfy and Space for supporting Wynonna Earp and also bring more attention to it in hopes of getting some Nielsen family eyes on it when it returns.
