Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Netflix Renews Lucifer for a Fifth and Final Season

It’s good news and bad news for fans of the cult-favorite series Lucifer. Netflix, which picked up the show for a fourth season after FOX cancelled it last year, has given it a fifth year renewal but that will be its last. Executive producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson expressed appreciation toward the streaming service for the renewal, saying it allows them to “finish the story of Lucifer on our terms”. But fans might have been hoping this one would stick around a while longer, especially after their worldwide-trending campaign to save the show last year. According to Deadline Hollywood, Lucifer has performed well for the Netflix thus far, but the streamer as shown a tendency of late to only keep originals around for a short time. And if fans try to lobby for the show to continue, they will be facing a much more difficult battle than before. Netflix put out a fair amount of effort to secure to the streaming rights to the first three seasons of the show and almost certainly have the entire series locked into a contract for at least two years after the final season airs. The show will at least get the chance to wrap up its storylines and will have produced 77 total episodes, but don’t expect this one to be taking a leap to another venue after the fifth season airs.

Lucifer focuses on the title character Lucifer Morningstar–aka the Devil–who gets bored in Hell and decides to go to the much more interesting Los Angeles where he runs a nightclub. It stars Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, D. B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, and Tricia Helfer and is based on the comic book character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg.

There are still several shows from the regular season that are awaiting renewal or cancellation announcements, and the Summer shows have just started rolling out.
