Cancellation Watch Weekly Roundup: Fear the Walking Dead Returns Down, NOS4A2 Has Okay Start

Weekly Roundup: Ratings results and status updates on all the currently airing sci fi & fantasy shows as well as those still awaiting word on their fates. For the latest ratings updates, be sure to follow the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site

Ratings Results of Interest: On Sunday, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead returned for its fifth season and the Walking Dexit continues for that show as it posted a 0.59 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with just under two million total viewers. That’s down from the 0.78 ratings average the show had last season, but it is not at disastrous levels yet. The total viewers still look good for a cable series these days and a sixth season gets this one to a syndication friendly count of episodes (though that does not appear to motivate the cable channels as much as the broadcast nets). If the show’s numbers do not drop too much in the coming weeks, it could come back for another year, possibly its last.

In the lead-out hour, supernatural series NOS4A2 had its debut and pulled a 0.29 rating with 1.1 million total viewers. That’s not terrible for a cable series these days and any show pulling over one million viewers away from the broadcast nets has a chance. The debut score is above the 0.25 average Preacher had last Summer on AMC and that one was renewed. But only for a final season, so NOS4A2 may not have much leeway for slippage.

On Wednesday, NBC’s paranormal procedural The InBetween had its debut and pulled a 0.6 rating with 3.7 million total viewers. It had the benefit of a good lead-in from the competition series American Ninja Wars, and its premiere numbers are decent for a Summer original series these days on the broadcast nets. But it is also right at the same point that Reverie was last Summer and NBC ended up cancelling that one after its ratings started to slip. We will have to see how this one tracks in the coming week to better gauge its status.

On Tuesday, Blood and Treasure slipped just a bit to a 0.5 rating with 4.2 million total viewers. It should still make it in the Top 25 for the week based on total viewers and appears to be doing well enough for now. This show is also running on CBS All Access, though, and does not have the same type of streaming deal as past CBS Summer shows like Zoo and Salvation that made them profitable upfront. So if its ratings slip much more it could find itself in trouble.

News Roundup: Bryan Fuller has not given up on a fourth season of Hannibal and continues to look for another venue that could pick up the cult-favorite series cancelled by NBC in 2015.  In development news, Hulu has entered the epic fantasy game and is developing a series based on Stephen King’s The Eyes of the Dragon. Netflix continues to leverage its partnership with Mark Millar and is developing a series based on his comic The Magic Order.

Currently Airing / Streaming:

The 100 (CW, Status – Renewed): This show has returned for its sixth season with decent ratings for a CW entry and has already been renewed for a seventh season.

Agents of SHIELD (ABC, Status – Renewed): There were rumors that this show’s sixth season might be its last season, but ABC has decided to bring it back for a seventh year which will air in Summer 2020.

Blood and Treasure (CBS, Status – Renewal Possible): This show debuted with decent same day ratings for a Summer series on CBS and slipped only a little in its second week. If it holds mostly steady at this point, it could still get a second season.

Cloak and Dagger (Freeform, Status – On the Bubble): This show’s numbers have slipped to dangerous territory the last few weeks and are down overall this season. Disney owns Marvel and Freeform, so they could give the show some slack and still bring it back for a third season. But a Call to Action from fans may be needed to keep this show going.

Fear the Walking Dead (AMC, Status – Renewal Possible): The Walking Dexit continues for this show as it has returned down from last year’s numbers. But it is still doing well enough for a cable series these days and could still stick around for another year.

Good Omens (Amazon, Status – Mini-Series): This show has been advertised as a six-episode mini-series with no indication that it might carry on beyond that point. But if it proves to be a huge hit for Amazon, they could find ways to continue the story.

Happy (Syfy, Status – On the Bubble): The numbers for this show have remained low through its second season and have it at levels that have seen other Syfy entries cancelled. The network’s parent company does have an ownership stake in the show, though, so it still has a chance.  Fans should definitely take to the social nets with a Call to Action to help its chances of getting a third season.

The InBetween (NBC, Status – Renewal Possible): This show was originally intended for Mid-Season but was pushed to a Summer start which is never a good sign.  It debuted with decent ratings for a Summer entry, though it is right about where Reverie started for NBC about this time last year and that one ended up getting cancelled after its ratings started to slip. Fans should definitely take to the social nets to bring more attention to the show and help its chances.

Into the Dark (Hulu, Status – Renewal Possible): There has been no word on whether Hulu plans to continue this show beyond the twelve planned installments, but it has been getting some good buzz and could carry on for another year on the streaming service.

iZombie (CW, Status – Final Season): While never a strong ratings contender for The CW, iZombie has had a devoted following and the network is given it one finale season to wrap up its storylines.

NOS4A2 (AMC, Status – Renewal Possible): The debut numbers for this show are decent for a cable series these days and this one could stick around for a second year if it does not slip too much.

The Rain (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Netflix has been in the business of cancelling lately and the streamer appears more interested in churning through shows than keeping them around for multiple seasons. This one could still get a third season (which seems to be the ceiling for Netflix shows of late), but a push from fans could definitely help to bring this one more attention.

Siren (Freeform, Status – Renewed): This one started its second season with decent debut numbers, but then saw those slip somewhat.  But apparently Disney and Freeform still have faith in the show and have given it a third season renewal. It returns from hiatus on July 11th.

Swamp Thing (DCU, Status – Renewal Possible): This show’s first season was cut short by three episodes and it did not get an early second season renewal like Titans and Doom Patrol, so I have to wonder where it stands at this point. But as with all new shows on the streaming services, I have to believe this one has a chance at a second season. A push from fans on the social networks could definitely give it a boost, though.

The Twilight Zone (CBSAA, Status – Renewed): The reactions to this show’s first season have been somewhat mixed, but CBS All Access did give it the second season renewal which could give it time to hit its stride.

What We Do in the Shadows (FX, Status – Renewed): This show’s numbers slipped notably after its first couple of episodes, but it did make up some of the slack with delayed viewing and FX has given this one a second season renewal.

Young Justice (DCU, Status – Renewal Possible): According to Business Insider, the show has been a hit thus far and I expect to hear word on a fourth season renewal at some point. It resumes new episodes on July 2nd.

Season Ended But Still Awaiting Renewal / Cancellation Decision:

Black Summer (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): As a new series on Netflix, this show has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.

Chambers (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.

Deadly Class (Syfy, Status – Renewal Possible): This show got off to a decent start, but then saw its numbers slip in subsequent weeks.  But it still did okay overall for a Syfy entry, especially with its delayed viewing numbers, and the network’s parent company NBC Universal has an ownership stake in the show.  It has a chance at coming back for a second season, but fans may want to make a Call to Action on the social nets to give it a boost.

Love Death and Robots (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Yet another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.

Mars (NGC, Status – Renewal Possible): This show’s same day viewing numbers were down notably in its second year, but it relies more heavily on its global viewership stats. I consider a third season possible, though Nat Geo may decide to wrap it up at that point.

The OA (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): This show could get a third season (which seems to be the ceiling for Netflix shows of late), but a push from fans could definitely help to bring it more attention.

Osmosis (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.

SuperMansion (Crackle, Status – Renewal Possible): There has been no word on a fourth season of this show, but it has done well for Crackle so far and has also performed well in its encore run on Adult Swim. It released another special as recently as April 2019 and that might be its output for a while as the principals try to work in enough time in their schedules to produce more episodes.

Tidelands (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): This show is an Australian import for Netflix, so I’m not certain if its fate is more heavily determined by how it performs Down Under.  As with any first-season entry on the streamer, though, I would say that it has a shot at a second season.

Ultraman (Netflix, Status – Renewal Possible): Another new series on Netflix that has a decent chance of getting renewed for a second season because the streaming service tends to keep its originals around for two to three seasons.
