Syfy’s supernatural drama Wynonna Earp, based on the IDW comic of the same name, received a fourth season renewal announcement last July and fans of the show have been expecting it to return with new episodes this Summer. But the show appears to be facing some troubles as series star Melanie Scrofano has indicated that production has not begun on the fourth year yet, apparently because its production company IDW Entertainment has run into financial difficulties. The show is an acquisition by Syfy and that network does not control the production. But the cable channel has indicated its support with the statement:
Syfy ordered Season 4 of Wynonna Earp from IDW and is completely committed to the series. This has not changed.
IDW has also made a comment and indicated that they are committed to the property, but their statement does not guarantee that a fourth season of the TV series will happen:
IDW is committed to continuing to tell the Wynonna Earp story. Much like the fans, we are passionate about not only the series, but the comics, the characters and the overall message that the Wynonna Earp franchise carries. We are in the process of working out the details for how the Wynonna story will continue and will share new details very soon.
Of course, this series has a very dedicated following and the fans have immediately taken to the social networks to show their support with the #FightForWynonna hashtag. This has trended worldwide in a very short time, and I expect this dedicated fanbase will remain vocal and very diligent in their campaign to keep the show alive.
Note that at this point there is no official statement that the fourth season will not happen, production has just been delayed. But this is definitely a concerning development for the show, and support from the fans can definitely help it through trying times. Just like last year’s social media campaigns that saw Amazon pick up Syfy’s cancelled The Expanse and Netflix pick up FOX’s cancelled Lucifer, support from the fans can bring attention to the show and possibly spark interest from other parties to help with the finances and/or bring another network onboard as a partner. Now is the time for a Call to Action as Wynonna Earp fans must take to the social networks to #FightForWynonna and the future of the show.
