Cancellation Watch Breaking News: CBS Renews God Friended Me for a Second Season

CBS announced today that its freshman series God Friended Me will be returning for a second. The news does not come as a big surprise even though its ratings in based on same day viewing in the 18-49 demographic have been only modest during its first year. This one performs better in the total viewers metric, regularly placing in the Top 25, which older-skewing CBS pays more attention to. It regularly received a boost in the Fall from NFL football bleeding into Prime Time, but it has also done a good job of maintaining its viewership so far in 2019 without the NFL lead-in. Last year, ABC failed to find much of an audience for similarly themed Kevin Probably Saves the World and that one was cancelled after one season. But God Friended Me is the type of feel good show that appeals to the typical CBS viewer, the same network that sustained Touched by an Angel for nine seasons. It only marginally counts in the sci fi / fantasy genre, but I have been tracking its progress through its first season thus far.

God Friended Me follows a self-avowed atheist who is “friended” by God on social media and who is tasked with helping others who need special assistance from above. It stars Brandon Micheal Hall, Violett Beane, Suraj Sharma, Javicia Leslie, and Joe Morton and airs Sundays at 8 PM EST.

With Mid-Season now in full swing, expect to hear more cancellation and renewal announcements in the coming weeks and months, and The CW could be making its blanket renewal statement at any time now.
