Sci Fi TV Development: Steve Carell Joins Space Force, Michelle Yeoh Star Trek: Discovery Spin-Off in the Works, and More

Development should be ramping up over the next few weeks with pilot season having started up.  Following is a rundown of the announcements from the last few weeks.

Netflix has placed an order for the comedy series Space Force starring Steve Carell

Network: Netflix

Starring: Steve Carell

Description: “A workplace comedy centered around the people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services.” Variety

Comments: Netflix has ordered this to series and will likely look to be adding it to its lineup of originals late 2019 or early 2020.






TNT announces cast for Ridley Scott’s Raised by Wolves

Network: TNT

Starring: Travis Fimmel, Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, Winta McGrath, Niamh Algar

Description: “The series revolves around two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task.” Deadline

Comments: Production begins on this one this month and it will be looking at a late 2019 / early 2020 start. You can read more about the cast and the roles they will play at the link above.


Disney+ is working on a Lady Sif TV series

Network: Disney+

Credits: Kevin Feige (Executive Producer), Marvel Studios (Studio)

Starring: Jaimie Alexander

Description: This six-to-eight episode mini-series spin-off from the Marvel Universe movies will follow the further adventures of Lady Sif. CBR

Comments: This joins other Marvel Universe mini-series in the works for Disney+ that will focus on Scarlet Witch / Vision, Loki, and Falcon / Winter Soldier.


Netflix orders Shadow and Bone fantasy series

Network: Netflix

Starring: TBA

Description: “Shadow and Bone brings together the stories and characters of both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, two overlapping series that take place in Bardugo’s Grishaverse. In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.” Deadline

Comments: Netflix has placed an eight-episode order for the series. It is based on Leigh Bardugo’s fantasy book series and will likely be targeting a 2020 debut.


A kid-focused Starfleet Academy animated series is in the works

Network: CBS All Access

Description: The series would focus on cadets at the Starfleet Academy.

Comments: Not many details are available for this one yet beyond the fact that it will be animated and skewing to a younger audience. THR


CBS is looking to add Evil to its Fall 2019 schedule

Network: CBS

Description: “A series about the battle between science and religion, EVIL focuses on a skeptical female clinical psychologist who joins a priest-in-training and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there’s a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work.” The Wrap

Comments: Part of this year’s Pilot Season, CBS will be considering this series for their Fall 2019 schedule.


CBS All Access is working on a Star Trek: Discovery spin-off starring Michelle Yeoh

Network: CBS All Access

Description: “The series would see Yeoh reprise the role of Philippa Georgiou, expanding on the character’s current position as a member of Section 31, a shadowy intelligence agency operating within the Federation.” Variety

Comments: This series is in the very early stages of development and word is that it might not air until after Star Trek: Discovery ends its run.


NBC has ordered a pilot for the conspiracy series Emergence

Network: NBC

Credits: Michele Fazekas (Writer / Executive Producer), Tara Butters (Writer / Executive Producer), Robert Atwood (Executive Producer), ABC Studios (Studio)

Starring: TBA

Description: “A character-driven genre thriller that centers around a sheriff who takes in a young child that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation draws her into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, and the child’s identity is at the center of it all.” The Wrap

Comments: It is unclear if this series will have sci fi / fantasy elements or just deliver a conspiracy drama. It is part of this year’s Pilot Season, and NBC will be considering it for their Fall 2019 schedule.


Hulu has picked up a series based on Eric Heisserer’s Short Story “Simultaneous”

Network: Hulu

Starring: TBA

Description: This series is “described as a cerebral detective thriller involving regenerative past lives”. Deadline

Comments: Hulu will be looking to add this to its lineup of originals in late 2019 or early 2020.
