Coming as no surprise, Syfy confirmed today that its season-long horror anthology series Channel Zero will not be returning for a fifth season. That series debuted in Fall 2016 to passable ratings and was given a renewal through its fourth season. But its numbers have been on a steady decline and the show only averaged a 0.07 rating (seven one hundredths of a rating point) this past Fall. Syfy’s parent company NBCUniversal has an ownership stake in the series, but apparently the ratings were too low to justify bringing it back for another season. Channel Zero has received good buzz from genre fans and critics alike, but the show has failed to build much of an audience. There is no word on whether this one will be shopped around, and there is apparently not an organized enough of a fanbase to lobby for another venue to pick it up.
Channel Zero is a season-long horror series that adapts “Creepypasta” tales that have become well-known on the internet. It was created by Nick Antosca who had previously worked on Teen Wolf and Hannibal.
As we head into Mid-Season, expect to hear word on more Fall shows that have wrapped up like Nightflyers, Origin, and Stan Against Evil, and The CW could be making its blanket renewal statement at any time now.
