ABC’s Agents of SHIELD will be returning for its sixth season next year, and according to an Instagram post from series star Elizabeth Henstridge it will have its debut in July. Of course, the fact that the season has only thirteen episodes and will not start until Summer makes is seem like the network is shuffling it off for a burn-off run with no plans for additional seasons. But network boss Channing Dungey has said that is not necessarily the case. She had the following to say about the show’s scheduling and its future in a recent interview:
We’ll see. I feel like last season was our strongest creative season ever and the fan base remains very loyal — and we do very well in delayed viewing. It’s my hope that by moving it to summer, where our live-same-day ratings are less important and it might be able to continue for longer.
Still, if you look past the network-speak, it sure seems like the agents could be headed to their last assignment. But then this show has beat the odds on a regular basis, so don’t count it out just yet.
