Netflix Begins the Quest of The Dragon Prince
Netflix has yet another animated series on the way as Avatar: The Last Airbender head writer Aaron Ehasz will be bringing The Dragon Prince to the streaming service. A tweet went out this week showing the poster for the show and teasing what it will be about:
Avatar: The Last Airbender headwriter Aaron Ehasz has paired with Netflix for #TheDragonPrince, a new animated series about two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.
The series will be previewed at Comic-Con next week and is currently set for a September bow on the streaming service.
Jason Momoa Joins Apple Sci Fi Series See
Aquaman star Jason Momoa will be joining Apple’s upcoming science fiction series See in the leading role. Deadline Hollywood gives the following description of the project:
See is set in a future when the human race has lost the sense of sight, and society has had to find new ways to interact, to build, to hunt, to survive. All of that is challenged when a set of twins with sight is born.
Momoa will play Baba Voss, a fearless warrior, leader and guardian. This will likely join Apple’s line-up of original programming at some point in 2019.
Netflix Releases Trailer for Indian Horror Series Ghoul
Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming Indian horror series Ghoul. Following is the tagline for the show:
A newly minted military interrogator arrives at a covert detention center to discover that some of the terrorists held there are not of this world.
That one is set to debut on the streaming service on August 24th.
Netflix Overtakes HBO with Emmy Nominations This Year
The Emmy nominations were announced this week with Netflix taking the most at 112 vs. HBO’s 108, marking the first time in eighteen years the premium cable channel was not the leader. Of course, Netflix is also leading in the number of original shows, so that helped it get the edge on the nominations. But Game of Thrones continues its streak as it has now set the all-time record for nominations. Most of the usual genre Emmy candidates are on the list including GoT, The Handmaid’s Tale, Westworld, and Stranger Things. It is nice to see Tatiana Maslany get the nod for Lead Actress in a Drama series for the final season of Orphan Black, though. You can see the complete list of nominations at this link.
Sci Fi TV Status Report: The Outpost Starts Slow for The CW
On Tuesday, The CW’s new fantasy series The Outpost had its debut but posted only a 0.1 rating with 770K total viewers. Those are pretty low numbers, even for The CW, but they do not necessarily mean the show is doomed. That one is actually an acquisition for the network to fill up some space on the schedule during the Summer months, and it likely does not come at a high price tag. The series is airing on Syfy over in Europe, and if it does well internationally The CW could keep it going here in the States if a second season is produced. Sci Fi TV Schedule: A Special Episode of Doctor Who, Premieres for Killjoys and Wynonna Earp, and More
This upcoming week will be a busy one with several premieres as well as the television debut of a lost Doctor Who episode. On Wednesday, BBC America will run the six-part episode “Shada” from the Tom Baker era. That one was started but never completed due to a strike, and it has since been reconstructed with animated segments and the original cast filling in the dialog (you can see the trailer above). Also next week, Syfy’s Wynonna Earp and Killjoys have their third and fourth season debuts respectively starting at 9 PM EST on Friday. The former show will have a preview run of its premiere on Monday at 11 PM EST. On Wednesday, the second of Netflix’s animated Godzilla movies has its debut, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle.
