Cancellation Watch: Krypton Ends Its First Season on a Low Note

Krypton Faces an Uncertain Future When It Returns Next Year

On Wednesday last week, Syfy’s Krypton started to feel the Nielsen Kryptonite as it slipped to a series low 0.14 rating with 557K total viewers for its season finale.  As I have said before, if that show has a deal similar to what The Expanse did that requires it to live and die by its live broadcast ratings, it faces a tough battle when it returns for its second season.  Krypton started the season out with an impressive (for Syfy) 0.42 rating based on Same Day viewing, but its numbers have dropped pretty much every week, and it ended the season with a rather poor showing.  In fact, during the time that this show aired concurrently with The Expanse, its ratings average was only slightly better (a 0.19 vs a 0.18), and several times The Expanse posted higher numbers.  You can see on the chart below (click to enlarge) the downward trend of Krypton‘s ratings as well as the comparison with The Expanse while the two shows were running together.  Considering that Syfy could not justify keeping The Expanse on its schedule while averaging a 0.18 rating (Amazon has since picked up the show), what prospects does Krypton face if the downward ratings trend continues into the show’s second season(it is likely an expensive show to produce just like The Expanse and it is also not owned by Syfy)?  I will be looking at Syfy’s prospects in general in an upcoming post, but right now I definitely do not have a good feeling about Krypton‘s future at this point.

Ratings Results of Interest: The Flash Improves for Its Season Finale

There was not too much in the way of ratings activity last week with most of the regular season shows having wrapped up, but there were some numbers worth noting.  On Tuesday, The Flash improved to a 0.8 rating with 2.2 million total viewers for its season finale.  It will be interesting to see if that one can get back up to the 1.0 level next season or if it continues to slip like it has this year.  Over on FX Legion slipped to a 0.18 rating with 409K total viewers as that one remains On the Bubble.  On Wednesday, Syfy’s The Expanse slipped a bit to a 0.17 rating though its total viewers actually improved to 625K.   Over on USA, Colony improved slightly to a 0.17 rating with 698K total viewers, but that one remains On the Bubble.

On Thursday, Freeform’s Siren held mostly steady for its season finale with a 0.21 rating and 658K total viewers. That one has been renewed for a second season. On Sunday, Westworld slipped to a 0.37 rating with 1.1 million total viewers. But it was Memorial Day weekend and HBO knows it will make that up with delayed / digital viewing. AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead and Into the Badlands took the holiday but will be back with new eps this coming Sunday.
