Cancellation Watch: Timeless Improves With Season Finale, Will It Be Enough? Siren Gets Renewed by Freeform

Timeless Is on the Clock

On Sunday, NBC’s Timeless had its two-hour season finale and posted a 0.6 rating based on same viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 2.4 million total viewers.  That is a slight improvement in the ratings from the past few weeks, though down year-over-year and from earlier in the season.  But the show was at Number 1 in the Nielsen Daily Social Rankings for Sunday and at Number 2 for in the weekly Top 10.  That was its second week in a row in the Top 10, so fans have definitely made their presence known on the social nets.  Now NBC has to make a decision on whether this is enough to greenlight another season, and I believe they need to look beyond just those same day ratings numbers.

The show has been posting decent delayed viewing numbers and the massive support on the social nets proves that their is an audience out their that the overnight ratings are not representing.   But the broadcast networks still tend toward old school thinking, so their is no guarantee they will give much weight to the show’s performance in the alternate metrics.  Fans need to stay active on the social networks and if NBC ends up giving it the ax, perhaps the fan support will convince another network (maybe one of the streaming services) of the show’s potential and that it is worth picking up.  Stay tuned to this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site over the next few days, because I expect an announcement at any time.

Siren Renewed by Freeform for Second Season

Freeform announced this morning that its supernatural series Siren will be returning for a second season. The news does not come as a huge surprise because that one has performed well for a cable series, though its numbers have dropped the past few weeks. But apparently the network (which is owned by ABC) is happy enough with the show as they have given it a sixteen-episode second season order (up from ten this year). That dark fantasy about mermaids making an appearance in a small fishing town is produced in house by Freeform productions, a trend that we are seeing much more often these days. Expect the second season to have its bow at some point in 2019.  That network’s other genre entry Shadowhunters has its mid-season finale tonight and we may hear word on its fate before ABC has its Upfront presentation.

Ratings Results of Interest: Fear the Walking Dead Holds, Into the Badlands Improves

On Sunday, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead held steady at a 0.85 rating based on same day viewing in the demo with 2.5 million total viewers.  That show continues to perform better than its third season and appears on track for a fifth year renewal.  Its lead-out series Into the Badlands improved to a 0.39 rating with 1.2 million total viewers which has that one looking a little better than it did last week.  Over on HBO, Westworld held mostly steady at a 0.63 rating with 1.6 million total viewers.  It has already been renewed for a third season.

On Friday, Once Upon A Time improved slightly to a 0.5 rating with 2.3 million total viewers as it heads to its season finale this week.  And Agents of SHIELD posted a 0.5 rating with 1.9 million total viewers as that one just received word that it will be returning for a sixth season.  I covered the early week ratings on Friday at this link and you can see the full ratings results for the week at this link.
