ABC has just announced the cancellation of three of its genre series, none of which come as a surprise. The Inhumans has been cancelled after one very short season and that announcement has been expected since Fall. The series received an eight-episode order that began with the first two episodes getting an early release in IMAX theaters. But The Inhumans did poorly in that venue and drew plenty of negative buzz (unfairly in my opinion), and the show never managed to find much of an audience when it aired on Friday nights in Fall. I have had this one at Cancellation Likely status for a while, and that has now been made official by its network. There is still a chance that the Inhuman characters from the show could make an appearance on Agents of SHIELD if that one gets a sixth season renewal, otherwise expect them to fade into the TV wasteland.
The second announcement was the cancellation of the Fall entry Kevin (Probably) Saves the World. That series debuted in the Tuesday 10 PM EST timeslot and actually drew decent ratings for its first few outings. ABC picked up three additional episodes of the show, but it became apparent pretty quickly that they were using it for schedule spackle after it went through frequent preemptions and also aired new episodes directly against Olympics coverage. I have had that one at Cancellation Likely status since late Fall, and ABC has finally announced its inevitable appointment with the Network Executioner.
The last announcement among the latest cancellations was late Spring entry The Crossing. That series debuted with a decent lead-in from the American Idol reboot, but never managed to take advantage of its timeslot. It debuted with acceptable ratings (a 0.9 score based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic), but it has dropped to as low as 0.5 the last couple of weeks. Its status has been uncertain since its debut and I moved it to Cancellation Likely a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if ABC ended up yanking that one from the schedule in the next week or so and casting it to a Summer burn-off run. Though since the regular season is just about over, perhaps they will leave it where it is to air out its remaining episodes.
There is still no word on Agents of SHIELD, though I am expecting that one to return for at least one more season, and there are more announcements that will be coming over the weekend as well.
