Cancellation Watch: Siren Has Good Debut for Freeform, The Walking Dead Drops Again

Ratings Results of Interest: On Thursday, Freeform’s new dark supernatural series Siren, about angry mermaids, had its debut and pulled a 0.30 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 869K total viewers.  That is an impressive start for a new cable show these days and makes it one of Freeform’s higher rated shows currently airing.  If this one holds above a 0.20 score for its first season run, then I would say it has a good chance of surviving into a second year.

On Sunday, AMC’s The Walking Dead dropped to a new non-Season 1 low as it managed only a 2.6 rating with 6.3 million total viewers. That show had actually ticked up last week and looked like it might be staving on the Walking Dexit, and this week’s drop could be due to Easter Sunday. I expect it to rebound by the time it gets to its season finale on April 15th. Over on FOX, The Last Man on Earth slipped to 0.6 rating with one million total viewers, possibly also impacted by and Easter lull. NBC’s Timeless was preempted for the live Jesus Christ Superstar production and returns next week. On Starz, Counterpart had a 0.10 rating with 383K total viewers for its season finale. It has already been renewed for a second year.

On Friday, CBS’ MacGyver returned after two weeks off and not surprisingly its numbers dropped.  It had a 0.8 rating with 6.4 million total viewers, though it will likely still make it into the Top 20 for the week based on that latter stat. On Thursday, Supernatural improved to a 0.7 rating with two million total viewers for its animated crossover with Scooby Doo and the Gang. I covered the early week ratings on Friday at this link and you can see the full ratings results for the week at this link.
