Is the Truth Still Out There for The X-Files?
The X-Files had its season finale on Wednesday which also appears to be it series finale since Gillian Anderson has said she is not returning and FOX appears to be ready to let that show go back into the vault for now. But with Disney buying up the FOX properties (along with you and me pretty soon), there is always a chance the show could make a return at some point. Hollywood Reporter talked with series creator Chris Carter about the show’s future and he had this to say: “I can’t imagine the show won’t come back in some shape or form.” Since the episode did end on somewhat of a cliffhanger, Carter said that he viewed it as more of a season finale than the end of the show, but he also said rather reflexively “my plan had always been to end it essentially in the way I ended it.” As for whether he would get the opportunity to elaborate on the questions that episode left hanging, he said that chances for another season are “out of my hands.” You can read the full interview at this link.
The tenth and eleventh seasons were not well-received by fans and seemed to raise more questions than they answered. And while the ratings were quite good for the first revival season, the eleventh year pulled mediocre at best viewership. With the Disney buyout, though, you can almost certainly expect The X-Files to return in some format, possibly another big-screen feature. But I am not expecting the network to greenlight another season at this point, especially with Anderson bowing out. Though revivals remain popular on television, so don’t be surprised if this one makes a return of some sort in the coming years.
Constantine Will Join the Crew on Legends of Tomorrow
Matt Ryan has reprised his role as Constantine across several episodes of Legends of Tomorrow this season and according to showrunner Phil Klemmer he will be become a regular member of the crew next year. The well-regarded Constantine TV series was cancelled by NBC after one season back in 2015, but the character has since made guest appearances on The CW’s Arrow-verse shows starting with an episode of Arrow in its fourth season. Constantine will now become a regular in that universe starting with the fourth year of Legends of Tomorrow. LoT has not been officially renewed yet, but I expect that one plus all of the Arrow-verse shows to be back next year. The bad news for fans who might be hoping that this could lead to a revival of the Constantine TV series is that is appears The CW is not doing any new development of DC Universe shows at this time. But at least we will get the master of occult back on a weekly basis, and Matt Ryan will also be voicing the character in the animated series that will debut this Saturday March 24th on CWSeed.com.
The Danish-Made Series The Rain Debuts on Netflix in May
Netflix continues to ramp up its original programming worldwide and it has the Danish post-apocalyptic series The Rain arriving this Spring. Following is the description given by Netflix: “After a brutal virus wipes out most of the population, two young siblings embark on a perilous search for safety.” Netflix has released the trailer for the series which has a voice-over in English, but it appears that the series will be in Danish with English subtitles (a dubbed option will probably also be available as it was with the Brazilian-made 3%). The entire first season of the show will be available for streaming on May 4th.
Sci Fi TV Status Report: It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s . . . Krypton’s Ratings!
Syfy’s Superman prequel series Krypton had its debut on Wednesday and posted a 0.42 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.3 million total viewers. And while coming in at below half a ratings point may not seem like much of an accomplishment to some, that is the highest ratings score the network has seen for one of its scripted shows over the past year. Happy! bowed in December with a 0.40 score, and The Magicians returned for its third season in January posting a 0.30 rating. So Krypton is currently soaring over all of the rest of Syfy’s original offerings. Of course, comic book / superhero TV series tend to have strong debuts as they draw a fair number of curious onlookers, then they typically trend downward after the premiere. We saw that with Happy! (based on the Grant Morrison comic) after its numbers dropped by more than half for its second episode, and we have also seen that over the past few years with shows like Agents of SHIELD, Gotham, and Supergirl when it aired on CBS (in contrast, The CW’s superhero offerings tend to be more steady with their viewership). But if Krypton holds above a 0.20 rating, which I believe it will based on the positive feedback it has been getting, then it should be a lock for a second season renewal. This is a high-profile series for Syfy, and I am guessing they want to try an keep it around for a while. Sci Fi TV Schedule: Sam Worthington Heads to Titan on Netflix
Yet another Netflix original on the way in the film The Titan which will star Sam Worthington. It appears that transforming into an alien–as he previously did in Avatar–is his thing because he will be doing the same in the Netflix movie. Here is the description of the film: “On a bleak future Earth, a soldier endures a radical genetic transformation to save humanity. But his wife fears he’s becoming more creature than man.” You can see the trailer above and the movie debuts on the streaming service next Friday on March 30th. Also premiering next Friday on Netflix is the second season of A Series of Unfortunate Events. All episodes will be available for streaming that day. The CW has released the trailer for the upcoming Supernatural episode “ScoobyNatural” that will see Sam and Dean team up with Scooby and the gang. That will air next Thursday, March 29th.
The upcoming series finale for ABC’s Once Upon A Time will be titled “Leaving Storybrooke” and will see the return of past season stars Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, Jennifer Morrison, and plenty more familiar faces from the show’s seven year run.
The CW’s Black Lightning has confirmed that Vixen and Supergirl exist in that show’s universe. Whether that indicates a team-up episode is on the way is uncertain at this point.
Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Kathy Bates will be returning for the upcoming 8th season of American Horror Story which will be subtitled “Radioactive”.
