Netflix Will Continue to Gaze Into the Mirror
Coming as no surprise, Netflix announced yesterday that Black Mirror has been renewed for a fifth season. I have seen no viewing stats for the show, but it has received much acclaim and is currently considered the gold standard among the recent revival of sci fi and horror anthology shows. No episode count has been announced yet but consider it to be in the range of 6 to 12 (the last two seasons had six eps each). Season 4 of the series premiered right at the end of 2017, so expect the fifth season to have its bow late 2018 or early 2019.
Black Mirror is an anthology series that gives a particular focus to the dangers and/or moral quandaries of technology. It was created by Charlie Booker and had two three-episodes season that ran on Channel 4 in England before it was picked up by Netflix.
Expect more renewal and cancellation announcements as we head into the final months of the current season. Be sure to keep an eye on this site as well as the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for updates and breaking news.
Ratings Results of Interest: The Walking Dexit Is Back On
On Sunday, The Walking Dead slumped back off from its short-lived ratings improvement and slipped to a 2.9 rating based on the 18-49 demographic with 6.8 million total viewers. Those are the lowest numbers that show has seen since its second season and this clearly indicates that the “Walking Dexit” has not ended for this show. Over on Starz, Ash vs. Evil Dead slipped to a 0.07 rating with 171K total viewers. I expect that show to see decent gains in delayed viewing, though, since it now airs directly against TWD on Sundays.
On Friday, Once Upon A Time returned from its Winter break and posted its lowest numbers yet as it only managed a 0.4 rating with 2.1 million total viewers. ABC has already announced that the show will be ending this season. Agents of SHIELD slipped from its last new episode to a 0.5 rating with 1.9 million total viewers, and its fate is starting to get a bit fuzzy. Over on CBS MacGyver had a 0.8 rating and 6.9 million total viewers which was down from the last time it aired before Olympics coverage began.
