Cancellation Watch: The Arrow-verse is Losing Steam

Ratings Results of Interest: All three of The CW’s Arrow-verse shows that aired this week slipped in the ratings and all are currently at series low levels. On Monday, Supergirl slipped to a 0.5 rating based on same day viewing in the 18-49 demographic with 2.1 million total viewers. On Tuesday, The Flash slowed down to a 0.7 rating with 2.1 million total viewers. And on Thursday, Arrow dropped to a 0.4 score with 1.4 million total viewers. Black Lightning, which is not considered part of the Arrow-verse, also dropped in its second week to a 0.6 rating with 1.9 million total viewers (Legends of Tomorrow is on hiatus until February). Of course, none of these shows are in danger of cancellation and I expect a blanket renewal announcement from the network, likely within the next month. But the superhero entries are definitely not drawing viewership to the network like they once were, and I would not be surprised to see The CW making moves to shift away from that genre within a couple of seasons. I will be looking at that in more detail in a coming post.

On Monday, FOX’s Lucifer aired its first new episode since the beginning of January and saw a lift to its ratings as it posted a 0.9 score with 3.8 million total viewers. If it can hold around those levels, I believe it will return for a fourth season. On Wednesday, Syfy’s The Magicians slipped to a 0.22 rating with 607K total viewers, but it is still performing well for that network. On Freeform on Thursday, Beyond slipped to a 0.07 rating with 234K total viewers for its second Season 2 episode. That one may be picking up some slack with digital and delayed viewing, but it is below the levels that got Stitchers cancelled this past Summer. I am moving it to Bubble status and may downgrade it to Cancellation Likely if its numbers do not improve.

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World was preempted this week and will be again this coming week as that show appears to be in schedule spackle mode at this point.  It was given an order of three additional episodes in Fall, but I theorized then that those eps would just be used to plug up holes in the schedule.  That certainly seems to be the case based on its frequent absences and the preemptions are doing nothing to help the show’s ratings.  I currently have that one pegged with a Cancellation Likely status.
