Cancellation Watch: The Magicians Has Decent S3 Debut, The X-Files Drops

Ratings Results of Interest: It has been a slow week with quite a number of shows still on their Winter breaks, but there was some ratings activity of note. On Wednesday, Syfy’s fantasy series The Magicians returned for its third season and posted a 0.30 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 782K total viewers. That is down from the 0.52 score the show had for its second season debut, but still very good for Syfy these days. As long as The Magicians does not tank in the coming weeks (unlikely) consider it a lock for a fourth season renewal. Happy! did not take advantage of its strong lead-in as it slipped to a 0.18 rating with 623K total viewers. But that one still looks to be on track for a second season renewal.

Over on FOX on Wednesday, The X-Files slipped to a 1.0 rating with 4.0 million total viewers for its second Season 11 episode. All indications are that the show will be ending after this year, and it is uncertain that FOX would even want it back at these levels. On TNT, The Librarians improved just slightly to a 0.27 rating with 1.4 million total viewers and that show looks to be on track for a fifth season renewal. On Tuesday, ABC’s Kevin (Probably) Saves the World slipped to a 0.6 rating with 2.4 million total viewers and that one continues to track toward cancellation.
