Renewals Possible for Once Upon A Time and Agents of SHIELD, Unlikely for The Inhumans
The TCAs are going on now when the networks discuss upcoming plans with the Television Critics Association, and the ABC’s Entertainment president Channing Dungey had some comments about the future prospects of several of the network’s genre entries. Discussing Once Upon A Time, Dungey noted that even though the show’s same day viewing has dropped with the move to Friday, the show’s Live+7 delayed viewing numbers have remained pretty good. People are still watching the show, just not necessarily when it airs live on Fridays. She also said that she is “cautiously optimistic” optimistic about another season at this point. Agents of SHIELD has also seen its numbers drop with the move to Fridays, but it is also performing well with delayed viewing and she believes that one could come back for a sixth season. Both of those shows have already passed the episode threshold for a solid syndication run, so any additional seasons are just padding to that. And they help plug up a couple of hours on a low viewership night for the network, so keeping them around makes some sense from a scheduling standpoint. Based on this info, I will be changing the cancellation status for both to Renewal Possible and will likely leave them there (short of a ratings collapse) until we hear a final renewal decision.
The prospects do not look very bright for The Inhumans, though. That show wrapped up its eight-episode run in Fall with low ratings and very negative buzz from genre fans (which I felt was somewhat undeserved). Dunning had the following less than encouraging words about the show:
It didn’t perform for us at the level we would’ve wanted. We haven’t made any official decisions yet about what we’re going to pick up in May, but I will say that the numbers unfortunately were less exciting for us than we’d hoped they would be. Not saying anything officially at this point.
So unless Disney steps in to save the show (unlikely), that one seems almost certainly on the way out at this point. I have had it at Cancellation Likely since Fall. Not mentioned was Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, and it is currently tracking toward cancellation.
Get Ready to Add a Fourteenth Season to Supernatural‘s Run
At the TCAs, CW boss Mark Pedowitz was asked about long-running series Supernatural and gave what has become the expected answer concerning that show: “That show will go on as long as it keeps going, the boys (stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) keep doing it and the ratings keep holding.” He noted that it would reach its 300th episode next season, and even though he would not commit to another year, indicated that it is likely to come back. At this point, I expect to hear a blanket renewal for the network’s Fall genre entries either later this month or early in February because it has become a tradition for The CW to make those announcements early.
Ratings Results of Interest: Falling Water Returns Down
On Saturday, USA’s paranormal series Falling Water returned for its second season with a 0.09 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic and 279K total viewers. That is down from the 0.15 ratings average the show had in its first season, but the Saturday night scheduling (it aired on Thursdays last year) may be impacting its audience. It is hard to gauge that show’s standing because an exclusive streaming deal with Amazon helped get it a second season last year and could keep it going despite its current low ratings. Of course, a Netflix deal helped Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency get a second season but not any further as BBC America just cancelled that one. Too many intangibles for Falling Water, so I am just going to consider it a toss-up and start it out as On the Bubble.
On Sunday, Ghosted returned from hiatus with a nice boost from the NFL playoffs as it had a season high 1.6 rating with 3.9 million total viewers. The ratings boost also trickled down to The Last Man on Earth at the 9:30 PM EST hour as it also pulled a season high 1.1 score and 3.0 million total viewers. I believe that both of these shows are currently tracking toward renewal.
On Friday, Agents of SHIELD improved to a 0.7 rating with 2.5 million total numbers, boosted by the lead-in from the premiere of reality series Child Support. MacGyver had a 0.9 rating with 7.8 million total viewers for CBS, and that show currently looks to be on target for a third season renewal.
