Cancellation Watch: The X-Files Returns Down

Not as Many Want to Believe in The X-Files

On Wednesday, The X-Files was back after two years and posted a 1.3 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 5.2 million total viewers. That is down notably from the 6.1 rating the show had for the debut of its first revival season, but then the ratings environment has gone through an upheaval over the past two years, and anticipation was not as high for the Season 11 debut. That is still a decent score for a broadcast network show these days, but it does not appear that FOX had plans beyond the current season for the show. It is possible that they could decided to keep it going (though without Gillian Anderson’s involvement), but I will be working on the assumption that the show will wrap up after its current run.

On Monday, both Lucifer and The Gifted returned from hiatus, but suffered because they air on the holiday. The former series had a 0.7 rating with 3.1 million total viewers and the latter had a 0.7 rating with 2.5 million total viewers. They both will be preempted this coming Monday, so FOX is doing these two no favors with its scheduling. The Gifted was just renewed for a second season, though.

On Tuesday, ABC’s Kevin (Probably) Saves the World returned from hiatus and actually improved slightly to a 0.7 rating with 2.6 million total viewers. But unless that one keeps trending up, that will probably not be enough to save it. On Wednesday, TNT’s The Librarians slipped to a 0.26 rating with 1.2 million total viewers, but I believe that one is still tracking toward a fifth season renewal. Syfy’s Happy! was preempted (though the schedule did not indicate that) and returns with a new episode next week.

All of the Thursday Syfy shows slipped this week as Van Helsing posted a 0.14 rating with 477K total viewers, Ghost Wars had a 0.09 rating with 338K total viewers, and Superstition had a 0.07 rating with 267K total viewers. Van Helsing and Ghost Wars were airing their season finales while Superstition still has two weeks to go.  The former  series has already been renewed for a third season while the other two are likely headed to cancellation. Also on Thursday, NBC’s The Good Place returned from hiatus pulling a 1.0 rating with 3.1 million total viewers. That is about even with its season to date average and that one has already been renewed for a third season.
