Cancellation Watch: Happy! Takes a Dive, The Librarians Returns Low

Syfy Execs May Not Be as Happy This Week

Last week, Syfy’s new fantasy crime drama Happy! debuted with very good numbers for its network, pulling a 0.40 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic. But the show took a pretty significant drop with its second episode on Wednesday, only managing a 0.17 rating with 607K total viewers. This show did receive more promotion than I have typically seen for a Syfy entry, and perhaps the comic has more of a following than I realized. But many of the curious onlookers that tuned in for the first episode did not stick around long. That 0.17 score is still decent for Syfy this Fall, and if the show doesn’t sink much more I believe the network will tout it as a hit (on the strength of the debut numbers) and give it a second season. But if Happy! slips to the levels we have seen from most of Syfy’s other under-performing Fall shows, I’m thinking the network execs will not be too happy. I will see how this one tracks over the next few weeks before making any change to its current status, though.

Ratings Results of Interest: The Librarians Returns Down

TNT’s The Librarians returned on Wednesday for its fourth season and scored a 0.29 rating with 1.5 million total viewers for its double-ep debut. That is down over forty percent from its Season 3 debut, but it is still a decent rating for a cable series these days, especially the total viewers stat. Unless the show completely tanks over the rest of the season, I believe that TNT will give it at least one more year if not more. Over on USA, Mr. Robot had a 0.19 rating with 454K total viewers. As expected, that show was renewed for a fourth season this week.

On Tuesday, ABC’s Kevin (Probably) Saves the World remained at a 0.6 rating with 2.5 million total viewers for its Fall finale. It still looks like that one probably will not survive beyond its first season. On Monday, FOX’s Lucifer and The Gifted both wrapped up their Fall runs on a down note as each only managed a 0.8 rating based on same day viewing in the demo. The latter series has been scoring well in delayed viewing, though, and Lucifer is sprinting distance from the syndication stretch, and the broadcast networks in general have been experiencing a late Fall slump. If those two can rebound just a little at mid-season, I believe the will be okay.
