Coming as no surprise, Netflix announced yesterday that Luke Cage, the third solo entry in their Defenders series, will be returning for a second season. This series, about a man who has super strength and impenetrable skin, has been well-liked be fans and critics just like the two shows that preceded it, Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Netflix does not share its viewing numbers–though SymphonyAM will likely give us glimpse at them at some point–but I have been expecting the renewal for Luke Cage because the Defenders shows have proven popular thus far. Daredevil has already aired its second season with a third on the way likely in 2018. Jessica Jones has been renewed for a second season which will also likely hit in 2018. The fourth solo series Iron Fist is set for a March 17, 2017 debut, and then the team-up Defenders series will be hitting later in the year. Also, the Daredevil spin-off series The Punisher will be bowing at some point in 2017. So there is plenty more of The Defenders to come on Netflix over the next few years.
Now, several of the broadcast and cable channels need to get their act in gear and announce renewals for shows currently in limbo as we are still waiting to hear word on Slasher (Chiller), Wayward Pines (FOX), and Between (Netflix). Keep an eye on this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for news on these as well as any updates on the Fall shows currently airing.
