Cancellation Watch Breaking New: Syfy Renews Wynonna Earp for a Second Season

wynonna-earp-s1Slipping completely through the cracks amidst all of the higher profile news coming out of the San Diego Comic Con was the announcement by Syfy that their supernatural western series Wynonna Earp, based on the IDW comic of the same name, has been renewed for a second season. The news does not come as a huge surprise, but the renewal was definitely not a sure thing either. Wynonna Earp was the highest rated of Syfy’s Spring scripted entries, but that only amounted to a minuscule 0.13 rating average based on the overnights for the 18-49 demographic. And it did not see much in the way of delayed viewing gains either. But the show does have a loyal and vocal following that has been very active on the social networks. It is also an inexpensive series to produce, and Syfy has typically been giving its shows at least two seasons to prove themselves the last few years. That said, this show has only received a ten episode order (down from thirteen for its first season) and will probably need to see some improvement to its numbers in its second year, otherwise it could join other Syfy two-season-and-out entries like Helix and Dominion.

Wynonna Earp was the last of its network’s Spring shows to hear word on its fate. 12 Monkeys received a renewal announcement (for a shortened and possibly final third season) late last month, and Hunters received the expected cancellation announcement. Other Spring shows still awaiting a renewal / cancellation announcement include FOX’s Houdini & Doyle (cancellation likely), Chiller’s Slasher (renewal possible), and Freeform’s Stitchers (on the bubble).  Keep a close eye on this site as well as the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for any breaking news on those shows and more in the coming weeks.
