Coming as no surprise, new series Shadowhunters has been renewed for a second season by Freeform (formerly ABC Family). That series has not counted as a breakout hit ratings-wise this year, but it has pulled decent numbers for a cable series these days and it has seen good delayed viewing gains (more important among the cable channels than the broadcast networks). Plus, it has demonstrated a “stickiness” in social media, something that is becoming more and more important in gauging a show’s audience of late. In addition, it has performed better than Stitchers did last Summer before that show was renewed by the same network. This series is based on The Mortal Instruments series of books by Cassandra Clare which were also adapted into a feature film. Shadowhunters has its Year 1 finale on April 5th and its second season will likely bow in early 2017.
Expect even more announcements over the coming weeks and months (and the trend of late is definitely toward renewals) as we approach the May Upfronts where the networks present their schedules for the 2016-17 season (you can see the timing of those at this link). And keep a close eye on this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for updates and breaking announcements.
