Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.
ABC’s Galavant had its second season debut on Sunday and could only muster a 0.9 rating based on the preliminary overnights for the 18-49 demographic with just 3.2 million total viewers. That is just half the 2.0 score the show had for its Season 1 debut and it matches the series low it sunk to last year with its third episode. With numbers like that, you would assume that the show is certain to be cancelled, but then that was the assumption I made last year (when it ended as one of ABC’s lowest rated scripted shows) and it still got renewed. So does that mean this show really could survive at these ratings levels? Well, it thumbed its nose at the Cancellation Bear from the TV by the Numbers website with the episode title of its Season 2 premiere: “A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear”. And I’m personally not going to make much of a guess on this season because the show appears to have a fairy godmother protecting it. I’m starting it at a Moderate Cancellation Alert level and I will just leave it there until we hear final word on its fate, probably sometime around May. The ratings certainly suggest this one will not be coming back for a third season, but it has beat the odds before. If it does so again this season, that definitely counts as a happily ever after and it gets to laugh at all us ratings doomsayers once again.
Breaking news from last week: Syfy’s The Expanse has been renewed for a second season.
