The Charts: Extant Returns to the Lower Rungs of the Charts With Its Season Finale

Tracking the activity on the ratings and social network charts for science fiction and fantasy television shows from the prior week .  For the most recent ratings results, be sure to follow the Cancellation Watch column.

CBS’ Summer series Extant had its season (and possibly series) finale last week and it managed to return briefly to the charts after dropping out altogether the prior week.  The show made it to the Number 20 slot in the Top 25 based on Total Viewers for the week, though it did not make it into the list tracking the ratings in the 18-49 demographic.  Based on its lackluster performance in the ratings, that show appears to be on the verge of cancellation unless partner Amazon can work out a deal to keep it going.  CBS’ other Summer series Under the Dome slipped a bit in both the ratings and total viewers charts last week seeing as it had increased competition from Monday Night Football.  That series appears to be in better shape for a renewal, though.  Both Extant and Under the Dome dropped notably in the General Sentiment charts that track social network activity, likely because of more new programming on television last week with the early Fall startups.  As for the cable shows, several of the usual Summer entries made it into the General Sentiment charts (though Z Nation dropped out after only one week), but there was no activity in the Nielsen Twitter Ratings or cable Top 25 for the week with shows like Teen Wolf and The Last Ship wrapped up for the Summer.  Next week we should see several of the Fall genre shows make appearances in the charts as the new season is starting to ramp up.
