Cancellation Watch: Cancellation Announcements are Likely Coming this Week. Will They Include Believe, Star-Crossed, and The Tomorrow People?

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

Ratings Results for the Friday through Monday sci fi / fantasy shows:

On the Hot Seat: Next week is the upfronts where the broadcast networks announce their schedules for the upcoming season, and they need to have pretty much all of their renewals and cancellations shored up by then. I expect announcements to start rolling off in the next few days, though some may be held off until the very last minute. In the last edition of my Power Rankings, I gave may final call on the shows that have not been renewed or cancelled yet, and I haven’t seen anything from the Friday through Monday shows that has caused me to change my mind on them (I am wavering on my cancellation call for Wednesday’s The 100, though). On Sunday night, NBC’s Believe remained low at a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.3 million total viewers. Its numbers have just been too low since moving to Sunday nights and I can’t see how the network would renew it unless they made some lucrative behind the scenes deal with executive producers J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuarón. On Monday, Star-Crossed could not improve its numbers as it pulled another 0.3 score with around 900k total viewers. That show has barely risen above that level since its debut and seems surely doomed at this point. And The Tomorrow People did only slightly better with its season finale, scraping up a 0.4 rating with right at a million total viewers. The move to Mondays did that show no favors and seems to have acted as a burn-off run. The CW has been known to renew low-rated shows before, but I just can’t see it happening in this case. On Friday, Hannibal remained at a 0.9 rating (even though the preliminaries indicated a 1.1 score) with 2.3 million total viewers. Too many intangibles involved with this international production that comes cheaper to NBC, though, so I am still taking a pass on calling its fate.

Other Ratings News: Could HBO’s Game of Thrones be approaching The Walking Dead levels? GoT‘s numbers just keep going up and up as its latest episode set a new high at a 3.9 score in the 18-49 demo with 7.2 million total viewers. That’s still less than half the 8.0 rating TWD pulled for its Season 4 finale, but GoT could easily get above the 4.0 level this season based on the way it has trended thus far. On Sunday, Once Upon A Time slipped to a 2.1 rating with 6.9 million total viewers, but those are still decent numbers for a broadcast network show on that night. Expect it to be on the renewal side of the announcements when ABC gets to that this week or early next. And Resurrection also looks to be on target for a renewal nod as it improved its numbers to a 2.1 score with 8.2 million total viewers. And FOX’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey improved is ratings to a 1.6 score with 4.1 million total viewers. On Friday, NBC’s Grimm slipped to a 1.3 rating with 4.9 million total viewers, but that one has already received its renewal announcement. On Monday, Syfy’s Warehouse 13 could not crack the Cable Top 100 with its third to last episode. I will search around for its final numbers, though, and post them out on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site when I can.
