Description: Based on the wildly popular comic book series “Hellblazer” from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, “Criminal Minds”) is armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and a wickedly naughty wit. He fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to abandon his campaign against evil until a series of events thrusts him back into the fray, and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. With the balance of good and evil on the line, Constantine will use his skills to travel the country, find the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all. NBC.com
Why Was it Cancelled? Constantine received plenty of good buzz from fans and critics, but it could never find a large enough audience on Prime Time. That’s largely because it never did fit well on the broadcast networks (especially when NBC moved it to the 8 PM EST hour) and should have been on one of the cable channels from the start. There was word that it might shift to NBC’s sister network Syfy, but that appears unlikely. AMC would be a better landing spot, or one of the pay channels or streaming services. Word is that Warner Bros. studio is actively trying to shop it around, so the show may still live on. It all depends on how much effort the studio puts behind keeping it alive, and a fan uprising could definitely help its cause.
Update: Matt Ryan has reprised his role as Constantine in a recurring role on Legends of Tomorrow in its third season and he will become a regular in the show’s fourth year. He is also voicing the character in the animated Constantine series that debuts on CWSeed.com on March 24th.

It’s a shame – I wanted to like “Constantine” much more than I actually did. But, the show never did grab me, and I feel only a little regret about wasted potential now that it’s gone. I wonder if there is any crossover potential with “Lucifer”? I seem to recall the characters of both shows existed in the same universe, at least in the “Sandman” comics…. Done right, that could be a lot of fun.
