Why Was It Cancelled? The second season of this show premiered in March 2023 and it performed well in viewership. It had a five-week run in the Netflix Top 10 averaging 32 million hours watched per week and it spent four weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings averaging 771 million minutes per week. These numbers were down some from the first season, but still quite good for a streaming original. However, Netflix decided not to continue it to a third season blaming the actors’ and writers’ strikes. With those labor movements having ended, production is ramping up, but there is only a limited amount of studio space and resources along with a crowded schedule, and this one got squeezed out. The show has developed a notable fanbase over its first two seasons, though, and I expect them to make a Call to Action to keep Shadow and Bone going for at least a third season.

It’s not surprising considering the genre of this show. Netflix seems to only cancel fantasy shows and leaves only the boring ones. After hearing of shadow and bone being cancelled, I’m about done with Netflix.
