Cancellation Watch: FX’s The Strain Appears to be Headed for Renewal

The-Strain-FX-CancelledAccording to the Global News site, FX’s new sci fi/vampire series The Strain–based on the series of books by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan–will be receiving the greenlight for its second season shortly.  That site has apparently learned that the show “will be back in production in Toronto in mid-November”, which indicates it is moving forward with a second round of episodes.  The news comes as no big surprise seeing as the show has done well enough in the ratings thus far in its first year.  It can’t be called a breakout hit and it has not even performed as well as that network’s American Horror Story did in its first season, but it has still done reasonably well and I predicted last week that a renewal announcement would be coming soon.  Its numbers have been respectable for a basic cable series, averaging a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographics based on the overnights.  And perhaps FX hopes that it will grow its audience in the coming season just like AMS did as well as cable blockbusters The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.  I have not seen a confirmation of the renewal from any of the major sites that usually carry these announcements like TV by the Numbers or Hollywood Reporter.  But I would expect to see something in the next day or two (and I will point out that I scooped them), so you can pretty much consider the show’s seconds season to be in the bank at this point.
