Amazon has elected not to continue its conspiracy series Utopia, cancelling the show after one season. That show debuted in late September but did not place on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for its premiere week or any subsequent weeks. That is not a requirement for a series to be a success, but the show did not find much favor with critics either, currently holding only a 51% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Amazon did not give a reason for the cancellation, and the streamer has typically allowed its originals to go for at least a second season. It is possible that the increased production costs in the current COVID environment contributed to the show ending after one season. Whether fans will lobby for this one to move to another venue remains to be seen.
Utopia follows a group of people who discover a graphic novel that contains conspiracy theories relating to world events. They then find themselves hunted by a shadowy organization as they are also tasked with using the information in the comic to save the world. It stars John Cusack, Ashleigh LaThrop, Dan Byrd, Desmin Borges, Jessica Rothe, and Rainn Wilson and is based on the 2013 British series of the same name.
