Netflix has just recently renewed both The Umbrella Academy and Space Force, so it seemed about time for a cancellation which the streamer delivered yesterday with the announcement that its supernatural drama The Order will not return for a third season. That show first debuted in March of 2019 and then was renewed for a second season which bowed in June 2020. It is not one of Netflix’s higher profile shows, and it has not received a lot of promotion, but the series has been well-received by critics and fans across its two seasons. Series creator Dennis Heaton had the following to say on Twitter about the cancellation:
For two seasons I was honored to work with an incredible cast and crew on The Order for @netflix. It is one of the best experiences of my career. Unfortunately, we aren’t returning, but I will always cherish the memories and the props I stole. Thank you all for watching.

Heaton also teased what would have happened in the show’s third season:
PS – Jack was totally going to raise Alyssa from the dead, but she was going to come back wrong. Like, Pet Sematary wrong. Probably possessed by Zecchia. And a whole bunch of other corpses were coming back with her.

A reason for the cancellation has not been given, but if pressed I’m sure Netflix execs would site the now standard excuse of increased production costs in the COVID environment. While the streamer still tends to renew more shows than it cancels, it has a frustrating tendency to cut short fan-favorites like this one without allowing the series to resolve its storylines. Whether fans will lobby for the show to continue on another venue remains to be seen, but we do offer the opportunity to host a campaign page here at Cancelled Sci Fi.
The Order follows college student Jack Morton as he joins the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose, a secret society that teaches and practices magic. As Jack goes deeper into the organization’s history, he uncovers dark family secrets and an underground battle between werewolves and the magical dark arts. It stars Jake Manley, Sarah Grey, Katharine Isabelle, Matt Frewer, and Sam Trammell.
