Coming as no surprise, Netflix has renewed its superhero series The Umbrella Academy for a third season. That show proved popular when it debuted in 2019, and its second season–which debuted July 2020–launched the show into the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for four straight weeks, ranking as high a Number 1 during its first two weeks of release. The show has also been well-received by critics, currently averaging an 82% Fresh Rating across its first two seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. The third season renewal has been expected and a production start of February 2021 had already been mentioned by Production Weekly. Netflix tends to wrap up its originals around their third or fourth season, but if The Umbrella Academy continues to draw strong viewership (and drive new subscriptions), it could buck that trend.
The Umbrella Academy follows a group of sibling superheroes who come back together to solve their father’s death and learn that they must avert an impending apocalypse. It stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher and it is based on the comic book series of the same name created by Gerard Way.
